Legendary IU School of Nursing Leader to Receive Two Achievement AwardsINDIANAPOLIS - The IU School of Nursing (IUSON) is pleased to announce that Angela Barron McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN, distinguished professor, former university dean of the IU School of Nursing (1991-2003), current member of the IUSON faculty for 25 years and university dean emerita, will be the recipient of two achievement awards: an Indiana Women of Achievement Award from Ball State University and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Indiana Chapter. McBride will be presented a 2005 Indiana Women of Achievement Award on the evening of Wednesday, October 26, 2005 during the seventh annual Ball State University, College of Sciences and Humanities reception/dinner at the university's Alumni Center, Muncie. Over the years, this event has celebrated the outstanding contributions of women who make the world better because of what they have done; McBride's award recognizes her distinction in health education leadership. On Tuesday, November 15, 2005, McBride will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Indiana Chapter, annual philanthropic awards dinner, "Recognizing Giving Hearts" at the Westin Hotel, Indianapolis. As evidence of her philanthropic spirit, she hosted the school's first nursing and philanthropy conference in 1997 along with the Indiana University Center for Philanthropy and the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, and wrote the book, Nursing and Philanthropy: An Energizing Metaphor for the 21st Century, now in its second printing. "As one of the legendary nurse leaders in the world, Angela is the perfect recipient of these achievement awards," says Marion E. Broome, professor and university dean of IUSON. "She has been a pathfinder, a trailblazer, a groundbreaker, a trend setter --- the leader par excellence --- throughout her lifetime. Her fundraising knowledge and international reputation are unmatched. Angela's personal gift to the School of the Mary and John Barron Quality of Life (QOL) Research Award, named in honor or her parents, provides nurse researchers with an opportunity to further enhance their QOL research. She has always been extremely supportive of research efforts at IUSON and continues to do so with her philanthropic spirit and generosity." A native of Baltimore, Md., McBride graduated at the top of her class with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Georgetown University in 1962. She later earned her master's degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing from Yale University in 1964 and her doctorate in developmental psychology from Purdue University in 1978. McBride was the first woman in Indiana to be elected to the Institute of Medicine, National Academies of Science. Other notable honors include being named a "Sagamore of the Wabash" by former Governor O'Bannon; Distinguished Professor by Indiana University ; and one of the most influential women in Indianapolis by the Indianapolis Business Journal.
