Public Unveiling of Speak/Spoken Set for September 2

INDIANAPOLIS - The public unveiling of Speak/Spoken, a public art project created by Patrick Craig Manning, an assistant professor of photography at Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI, will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, September 2 under the canal's West Street Bridge in downtown Indianapolis.

The artist and the director of public art for the Arts Council of Indianapolis will be on-hand to talk about his project as part of the First Friday Gallery Tour, an Indianapolis Downtown Artist and Dealers Association-organized event during which more than 25 galleries and art venues will hold open houses

Manning's project examines what do Hoosiers say when asked about their opinions, dreams, ideas, memories and cherished places.

To create the project, Manning videotaped Indiana residents 18 and older at a variety of locations as they shared personal thoughts, idea and memories. So far, Manning has recorded more than 80 people and has accumulated more than five hours of footage

that will run on a random loop as it is projected onto silk screens that hang above the water's surface. He hopes to have a full 24 hours worth of footage before the end of the project's run.

The project is a result of the city's inaugural Public Art Great Ideas Competition, which is being managed by the Arts Council of Indianapolis and funded by the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission with support from Starbucks Coffee and the Efroymson Fund, a donor-advised fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Members of the public are invited to the unveiling of Speak/Spoken, where they can meet the artist, experience the outdoor installation for the first time, and learn about how they can be involved.
