School of Dentistry to Host Global Congress on Dental Research

ORCA logo
INDIANAPOLIS - Distinguished IU Professor Emeritus Dr. George K. Stookey, former director of the School of Dentistry 's Oral Health Research Institute, will serve as co-president and host of the 52nd Congress of the European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA), the world's leading group of scientists in the field of cariology (dental decay).

About 350 scientists from throughout the world will convene at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown hotel July 6-9 to discuss the results of 146 recent investigations in the field. A dozen IU researchers - 10 from the Oral Health Research Institute and two from the Department of Medicine - are among the primary presenters.

The congress will cover clinical investigations and studies pertaining to epidemiology, fluoride, microbiology and dental plaque, diagnostics, remineralization/demineralization, and erosion/hard tissues. The use of new technologies to detect caries at the earliest stages of development is one of several specialty areas of dental research being advanced by scientists at the Oral Health Research Institute, which has been under the direction of Dr. Domenick T. Zero since 1999.

Indianapolis is only the second non-European city in ORCA's history to have been chosen as a congress site.

The congress is open to anyone interested in cariology and caries research. Registration is required at www.orca2005.org.

For more information, contact Dr. Stookey (gstookey@iupui.edu).
