First Hoyt-Reichmann Chair for German/German-American Studies Named

INDIANAPOLIS - Antonius Holtmann, professor emeritus from the University of Oldenburg and director of the Research Center for Emigration from Lower Saxony to the United States, will be the first occupant of the Hoyt-Reichmann Chair at IUPUI.

The position was endowed in the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts two years ago through charitable remainder trusts provided by Giles and Dolores Hoyt, and Eberhard and Ruth Reichmann.

As a guest professor during the second summer session at IUPUI, Professor Holtmann will hold a seminar on emigration/immigration. The course is entitled "The Immigration Story - European Emigration to the U.S." (G490 German Colloquium/V605 Selected Topics, H590 Topics in History). It is an advanced undergraduate/graduate seminar and takes place from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 27 through Aug. 8.

Holtmann has published widely in the field of emigration studies and has done considerable work on the emigration from the area around Oldenburg, Germany, to Indiana, where there is also a town named Oldenburg.

Participants in the course will learn to use original documents, papers, maps, books and other primary sources; research sources in archives, libraries, monasteries and churches; and work toward better understanding American history and cultures.

For information on the course or the program, contact Professor G. Hoyt by phone at (317) 274-2330; e-mail at ghoyt@iupui.edu; or by mail at Max Kade German-American Research and Resource Center, IUPUI, 425 University Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46202 .
