Hard Hat Summer Ahead for IUPUI

Furniture from Mary Cable is removed for donation to Indianapolis Public Schools

INDIANAPOLIS - The good news: Beginning this summer, more major construction projects at IUPUI are expected to be underway at the same time than at any other time in the history of the campus.

The not so good news: as construction gets underway, it may be harder to drive or walk to your campus destination.

Beginning this summer, construction projects will include:

• The demolition of the Mary Cable building. The building was closed at the end of the 2005 spring semester and workers began removing asbestos from the building. Once the building is demolished, the site will be transformed into a parking lot in time for the fall 2005 semester. The lot will accommodate about 150 vehicles.
• Construction of the Campus Center. Once the Bower Building, located on the southwest corner of Michigan Street and University Boulevard, is demolished, construction of the four-story Campus Center, featuring a 179-foot bell tower of limestone and glass, will begin. Work on the project is expected to begin in June or July.
• Construction of the IU Cancer Hospital, across the street from the Campus Center construction site. The new hospital will be located at the northwest corner of University Boulevard and Michigan Street, and extend west to Barnhill Drive.
• Renovation of the University Place Hotel, located on the northeast corner of University Boulevard and Michigan Street. The facility is being completely refurbished from the ground level to the roof. Work is expected to be completed in March 2006.
• Research III is in the design phase, with plans set to begin construction late this year or early next year. The new facility will be located between Research I and Research II.
• Riley Hospital Phase 5, which will provide a major in-patient addition to the facility, including a new parking garage, is under preliminary design.

Construction for the new IU Cancer Hospital restricts lanes on University Boulevard

Michigan Street and University Boulevard will experience lane closures during the course of the construction projects.

Construction of a fence that will surround the construction of the IU Cancer Hospital begins Monday, June 27. At that time, the following lane closures will go into effect:

• The far west lane of southbound University Boulevard will be closed just south of the outpatient entrance to IU Hospital.
• The far north lane of Michigan Street will be closed from University Boulevard to Barnhill Drive.

University Boulevard south of Michigan Street also will experience periodic lane closures to enable materials to be delivered to the Campus Center construction site.

Several entrances to IU Hospital will be closed as of June 27 as well, including the staff entrance on Michigan, the glass walkway between IU Hospital and the Cancer Pavilion, the skywalk connecting the Vermont Street garage to IU Hospital and the metered parking lot/patient drop-off lot for the hospital and the Cancer Pavilion off Michigan Street.

Patients and visitors will still be able to enter through the main IU Cancer Pavilion entrance off Barnhill Drive and park in the Vermont Street garage.

Patients going to outpatient clinic appointments and visitors coming to see inpatients at the hospital will still be able to enter through the main IU Hospital outpatient entrance on University Boulevard. Accessible parking in the garage just west of University Boulevard is available.

To make it easier for patients and visitors to navigate around the construction, a covered walkway is being constructed along Barnhill Drive; more staff and volunteers will be available within the hospital to help direct patients and visitors; and temporary signs providing directions will be placed where needed.

Construction updates will be provided on a regular basis as work gets underway this summer.
