Biotechnology Certificate Training Program Enrolling for Fall 2005
IU School of Medicine, located on the IUPUI campus, created the Biotechnology Training Program as part of the Indiana Genomics Initiative in response to the growing demand for highly trained laboratory personnel resulting from the expanding frontier in biotechnology and the biomedical sciences. Housed in the new Biotechnology Research and Training Center, the program is designed for continuing education of people working in academic or industrial laboratories, as well as new college graduates who want to enhance their knowledge and skills. Beginning this fall, Indiana University Graduate School will offer both a certificate and master's degree in biotechnology on a part-time basis to enable students to work and study at the same time. A 17-credit Biotechnology Certificate requires 1½ years to complete. The curriculum includes: an introductory course in biochemistry and molecular biology; three hands-on laboratory courses; two problem-based courses in finding solutions to modern biotechnology problems; and a case-based course in responsible conduct of research. A 30-credit Master of Science in Biotechnology degree builds on the certificate program, requiring an additional 1½ years (13 credits) of advanced coursework, student seminars and independent research with a faculty mentor. Admission to the Biotechnology Certificate program requires a baccalaureate degree in science. After completion of the certificate program, students may continue on to the master's degree program.
