English Program for Japanese Women To Add Math/Computer Component

INDIANAPOLIS - Every year since 1998, the Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication has brought students from Tsuda College, an all women's private university located in Tokyo, Japan, to an intensive three-week summer English program at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

In past years, students in the intensive summer program have come from the Department of English at Tsuda College, but this summer a new component has been added. Students from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Department of International and Cultural Studies at Tsuda College will be included in the program and within a newly created computer science sub-program with an interdisciplinary focus.

In July and August, 29 Japanese students will take part in the intensive English program, with six students taking additional courses in collaboration with IUPUI's Department of Computer and Information Science.

Since the focus of the program is on English acquisition, all students will take oral and written English language classes and submit research projects on American culture. These projects on American culture are breathed to life by the students' exploration of the English language through organized trips and by their experiences living with local families. Students take an overnight trip to Chicago, explore cultural events in Indianapolis and participate in normal everyday activities organized by their host families.

ICIC is a center in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. ICIC offers English for specific purposes instruction for students, faculty, postdoctoral researchers and visitors on campus. These specialized language courses are custom-designed for the language communication needs of the learners. The classes typically consist of learners with a specific disciplinary focus, such as business or medical English.
