School of Science at IUPUI Announces New Women in Science ProgramINDIANAPOLIS - To encourage women to pursue an education and careers in the sciences and mathematics, the School of Science at IUPUI has created the W omen in Science House. The new housing program will provide an on-campus residential living and learning community for 30 science students of varying class years and majors. "The key element in the study of science is exploration. Earning a degree and becoming a modern scientist goes beyond the scope of learning from a text book in a classroom," said Dean Carl Cowen at the IUPUI School of Science. "This School of Science program will provide a learning experience where students can be nurtured and mentored in their studies, enhancing the individual's educational success and well into their science careers." Available to IUPUI students this fall, the Women in Science House programming immerses students in an environment that is conducive to learning with an emphasis on the particular needs of science students. The program will provide research learning experiences as well as financial assistance through scholarships, stipends and internships in the science industry. Free tutoring and workshops will help science majors with time management, study skills, career preparation and more. The House features 15 two-bedroom units and a community room, giving science students an advantage by offering "built-in" study partners as well as access to women scientists who are working and living in Indiana and throughout the U.S. The Women in Science program will be shaped by an advisory board that is comprised of women scientists and business leaders from some of the most highly respected companies and nonprofit organizations in Indiana . They themselves dispel the notion that women are some how less qualified or capable of excelling in the sciences and mathematics. The new housing concept will not be typical on-campus dorm living. Along with the benefits of living on an urban campus, students will have convenient parking and a river walk view of the White River. Other amenities will include: Nearly 800 square feet of fully furnished apartment with a private bathroom. Fully equipped kitchen with all appliances and full-sized washer and dryers in each unit. Personal bedrooms wired for high speed internet, telephone and basic cable. IUPUI School of Science is now accepting applications for 2005 fall semester.
