Three IUPUI Women to Continue Summer Institute TraditionINDIANAPOLIS - Three IUPUI women will attend the month-long Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education Administration this June. Their attendance continues a 17-year tradition of IUPUI representation at this national leadership development program. Professor Jacqueline Blackwell, School of Education; Deborah Grew, Interim Assistant Director of the Honors Program, University College; and Assistant Dean Gwendolyn Johnson, IUPUI Graduate Office, have been accepted as participants by the institute. This residential training program now in its thirtieth year is held on the campus of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. It offers women administrators and faculty intensive training in education administration. "The Bryn Mawr Summer Institute was a rare retreat from daily demands to consider the broad issues of higher education with a group of bright and aspiring women," says Joanne Warner, Associate Dean at the School of Nursing, and institute participant. "I was forever changed by this focused attention on my professional growth." Jonna Kane MacDougall, Assistant Dean at the School of Law, agrees, "The experience at Bryn Mawr was one that I will never forget. What I learned there more than a decade ago is still pertinent and helpful in my current career." Interim Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Amy Warner also attended the summer institute, "The experience helps provide the tools we need as women to match our abilities with the challenges and opportunities facing higher education. It also provides an opportunity to focus your attention and energy on how your talents can advance the work of your institution." Collaborating in this years effort to continue the tradition are several campus units who have agreed to help fund this year's candidates. They include the Office for Professional Development, University College, Research and Sponsored Programs, Office for Women, and personal contributions from IUPUI summer institute alumnae. IUPUI has sent candidates to the institute since 1988. Previous attendees include: Patricia Biddinger, Karen Black, Catherine Buyarski, Barbara Cambridge, Lillian Charleston, Andrea Engler, Eugenia Fernandez, Mary Fisher, Janice Froehlich, Karen Gable, Sharon Hamilton, Karen Johnson, Amy Jones, Florence Juillerat, Jonna Kane MacDougall, Joyce MacKinnon, Kim Nguyen, Jennifer Pease, Gail Plater, Mary Stanley, Regina Turner, Rebecca Van Voorhis, Amy Conrad Warner, Joanne Warner, Dorothy Webb, Kathryn Wilson, Sherree Wilson, and Marianne Wokeck. |
