Herron School of Art and Design to Install First of Its Kind Faust Sculpture

INDIANAPOLIS - A 20-foot vibrantly colored, aluminum sculpture designed by local artist and Herron alumnus James Wille Faust will arrive at Herron School of Art and Design for installation at approximately 1 p.m. Monday, May 2.

This is one of 15 sculptures arriving at the school to be showcased in Herron's 18-month long Public Sculpture Invitational, to coincide with Herron's public grand opening on June 3. Unlike the other sculptures, Faust's work will be a permanent addition to Herron's front lawn, and the first work of this scale created by the artist.

The Faust sculpture will be located on the corner of New York and Blackford streets on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. More than 50,000 motorists who pass by the intersection daily will view the piece. It also will be seen from Military Park and easily accessible by patrons of the Indiana State Museum, the Indiana Historical Society, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, and students and visitors to IUPUI.

Faust, an Indianapolis resident, has enjoyed a 35-year career in Indianapolis. Faust first achieved national recognition when Absolut Vodka commissioned him to depict Indiana for the award-winning "Absolut Statehood" advertising campaign of 1992-93. His work has been exhibited throughout the country and is included in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art; National Air & Space Administration; The White House Office, Clinton Administration, Washington, D.C.; Jason Berman, president of the Recording Industry of America; Simon Property Group; and actor Robert Redford.

The Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Herron School of Art and Design, the IUPUI Campus Arts Committee, and other anonymous private donors provided the funding for this public sculpture. Fabrication of the piece was handled by Jan Martin at Tarpenning-LaFollette Company in Indianapolis.

Herron's Public Sculpture Invitational, sponsored by Indianapolis Monthly Magazine, features the work of internationally-known Belgian artist Wim Delvoye, Tom Otterness, Judith Shea, John Ruppert, Edward Mayer and others, and remains on display through October 2006.
