Sullivan Leaves IUPUI to Become Policy Director for Senator Bayh

INDIANAPOLIS - Cheryl Sullivan, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, is leaving IUPUI to become policy director for U.S. Senator Evan Bayh.

Appointed vice chancellor in November 1997, Sullivan assumes her new duties Monday, April 4, 2005.

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz said Sullivan played a key role as a member of the campus family that worked hard to transform IUPUI into a nationally recognized urban research university.

"Even as she departs, she continues to exemplify one of the hallmarks of IUPUI: civic engagement," Bantz said.

As vice chancellor for external affairs, Sullivan was responsible for overseeing community and alumni relations, communications, public relations, and intercollegiate athletics.

Sullivan's new role is only the latest chapter of a career dedicated to advancing the quality of life and well-being of Hoosiers. She formerly served as executive assistant to then-Governor Evan Bayh for health and family policy; was named the head of the Family and Social Services Administration, the state's largest agency; and then took a leave of absence from IUPUI to return to that post at the request of Governor Joe Kernan.
