New Herron Building at IUPUI to Host "Otterness in Indianapolis" Bronze

INDIANAPOLIS - One of 25 bronze sculptures in the upcoming "Tom Otterness in Indianapolis " exhibition will make its home on the IUPUI campus during the public art display that officially opens April 15.

Otterness' "Fallen Dreamer," a 30-inch high, 42-inch long bronze sculpture of a head will be installed at Eskenazi Hall, the new Herron School of Art and Design building located at 735 West New York St. The bronze will be installed on a patio just to the east of the main entrance to the building.

The sculptures in "Tom Otterness in Indianapolis " currently are on display through Sunday (March 20) along a five-mile stretch of Broadway in New York City . They will be shipped by truck to Indianapolis for the exhibit scheduled to run April 15 through July 31.

Herron's long time role as a one of the city's cultural amenities made it an appropriate location for one of the exhibition pieces, according to Mindy Taylor Ross, public arts project coordinator for the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

"One of the things we are trying to do is provide synergies and linkages to cultural institutions across the city," said Ross, who is directing the city exhibit. "Herron is an important one of those institutions."

Otterness selected "Fallen Dreamer" for display at Herron.

"I think he might have seen it as a nice work to go across the street from Military Park , which was once used as a military hospital for soldiers returning from the Civil War," David Russick, director of the Herron Gallery said.

Near-campus sites for other Otterness sculptures include the Eiteljorg Museum , Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Capitol, Monument Circle and Circle Centre.
