Legal Scholars/Social Scientists to Discuss Impact of Global Warming, Biotechnology on Developing CountriesINDIANAPOLIS - Several of the world's most pressing issues, from global warming to biotechnology innovation hold special implications for less developed countries (LDCs). For example, although genetically modified organisms hold promise for adequate food supplies or LDCs, they also pose substantial environmental risks. A symposium Saturday (Jan. 22) at the IU School of Law-Indianapolis will bring together a diverse group of distinguished legal scholars and social scientists to examine such combined economic, environmental, legal and institutional problems. Titled "The Law and Economics of Development and Environment" will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Wynne Courtroom of Lawrence W. Inlow Hall, 530 W. New York St . Topics include "The Joint International Regulation of the Conservation and Use of Biodiversity," "Culture Counts: How Available Institutes and Experience Affect How You Select Environmental Tools," "Conserving Forests: Are Protected Areas the Only Way?" "What Makes Greenhouse Sense?" and "A New Framework: Post Kyoto Energy & Environmental Security." Speakers are Timo Goeschl, assistant professor of applied and agricultural economics, University of Wisconsin; Ruth Greenspan Bell, director, The Program for International Institutional Development and Environmental Assistance; Elinor Ostrom, professor of political science, Indiana University, Bloomington; Thomas Schelling, professor emeritus, Harvard University and professor emeritus, public affairs, University of Maryland; and Lakshman Guruswamy, professor of law, University of Colorado. Registration is available at the door. The registration fee of $75 includes all program materials, 5 hours of Indiana CLE credit, lunch, refreshment breaks and parking. Registration is free for IU School of Law-Indianapolis students and faculty; $10 for students and faculty from other educational institutions; and $25 for others who do not wish to earn CLE credit.
