UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OFFERS A FIRST TIME SYMPOSIUM ON ACADEMIC ADVISING

INDIANAPOLIS -Academic Advisors, Faculty, and Professional Staff now have the opportunity to attend a fall symposium kickoff that will focus on issues and trends in academic advising.

The Professional Development Committee in University College has organized the daylong symposium, A.I.M., "Advising in the Millennium". The event will be held October 13, 2000 at the NCAA headquarters. National speaker, Thomas Brown, will kick off the event as the keynote speaker. He is the Executive Director at De La Selle Institute Foundation. Previous to assuming this position in 1998, he served for 27 years as a Student Affairs and Academic Affairs educator at St Mary's College of California, most recently as Dean of Advising Services/Special Programs.

Following the keynote, there will be break out sessions for symposium attendees. These sessions will cover topics such as; being a culturally sensitive advisor, legal issues in academic advising, the changing demographics of IUPUI, and others.

There will also be time for group discussions and the creation of an advising network that will be connected through a list serve. Participants will also be able to collect information about a class on academic advising that is being offered in the Spring and on regional and national conference opportunities.

Members of the professional development committee and University College are excited to offer this opportunity and look forward to creating a strong network where all professionals involved with advising will have the opportunity to get connected and learn more about each school and department.
