NEW DEANSHIP AT IUPUI-BASED NURSING SCHOOL
TO PARTNER SCHOOL WITH COMMUNITY

INDIANAPOLIS - The IU School of Nursing has announced that longtime community activist and IU School of Nursing Associate Professor Rose Mays will take on the role of associate dean for community affairs, a new position that will work to enhance the school's involvement in the community.

"As more and more care will be delivered in the community (as opposed to hospitals), IU School of Nursing wants to be on the forefront of developing new models of health education and caregiving that are community-based," said IUSON Dean Angela McBride, citing as an example, the school's Shalom Healthcare Centers, which offer low-cost healthcare services to uninsured inner-city residents.

"My goals will be to create new community partnerships and strengthen existing ones through research and teaching," said Mays.

Mays' research and community work has focused on teen pregnancy prevention and models of care for parenting teens. She has served as a consultant to the Indiana State Department of Health's Maternal and Child Health Programs on various issues relating to adolescent health. More recently she has conducted research on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and partnered with the Children's Bureau of Indianapolis to serve homeless youth. Mays holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and has been teaching at IUPUI since 1973.

Her ties in the community are far-reaching. She is a current board member of the Girls Scouts of Indiana, and St. Mary's Child Center and past board member of the Children's Museum, the Visiting Nurse Service, Noble Centers of Indiana, and the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township Foundation. She and her husband Bill are also currently serving as co-directors of the Campaign for IUPUI.

Mays has also received numerous awards from both the university and community organizations for her dedication to teaching and for her community work.

"Rose combines in her person both vision, which is so necessary to move forward, and a practicality developed through years of working with all kinds of individuals," said McBride.

As part of her new position, Mays will also co-direct the school's Institute of Action Research which works with the local community to develop research to meet community needs.
