INDIANA SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICE, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE NOMINEE TO BE HONORED AT LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI BANQUET

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard and 1999 Nobel Peace Prize nominee M. Cherif Bassiouni will be guests of honor at the 21st Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis Alumni Banquet Wednesday (Sept. 13) at the Westin Hotel.

Bassiouni, a 1964 graduate of the law school located on the IUPUI campus, has been named the recipient of the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He is also the distinguished speaker for the banquet sponsored by the IU School of Law-Indianapolis and its alumni association.

Justice Shepard is the 2000 Honorary Alumni Award recipient. In 1987, the Hoosier native, then 40, became the youngest chief justice in the United States. He holds several positions of national leadership in the American Bar Association.

Both men will receive their awards during the 8 p.m. award ceremony that follows a reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:45 p.m. Dean Norman Lefstein and professor George Edwards will present tributes to the men.

Bassiouni, currently professor of law and president of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University, Chicago, has authored numerous books, articles and journals on U.S. criminal law, international and comparative criminal law and human rights. His work related to international human rights law has earned him numerous awards, including the Adlai Stevenson Award of the United Nations.

Justice Shepard is a part-time lecturer at IU School of Law - Indianapolis and is an ex-officio member of the school's board of visitors. Shepard, who earned his law degree at Yale University, is past president of the Appellate Judges Conference that represents about 700 federal and state appellate judges in the ABA. He now sits on the executive committee of the National Conference of Chief Justices, the 9-member board that sets policy for 55 chief justices from every state and U.S. territory.

The alumni banquet is held in conjunction with the Judge Robert H. Staton Golf Classic today (Sept. 12) at Eagle Creek Golf Course, and the Indiana Law Update 2000 Wednesday and Thursday, (Sept. 13 and 14) at the Indiana Convention center.

The golf classic benefits the alumni association's college scholarship fund. The Law Update, one of the state's most comprehensive continuing legal education program, provides 12 hours of CLE credit and one hour of ethics credit.
