KELLEY-INDIANAPOLIS
GRADUATE HATFIELD WINS
"DISTINGUISHED ENTREPRENEUR" AWARD
INDIANAPOLIS - Kelley School of Business Indianapolis graduate Michael Hatfield, President and CEO of Calix Networks, was honored with the "Distinguished Entrepreneur Award" at the annual IU Kelley Business Conference. The award has been given each year since 1974 to an IU Kelley School of Business alumnus for significant innovation and achievement in building a business.
Hatfield founded Calix, an optical networking start-up, in 1999 in Petaluma, California. Prior to founding Calix, he was co-founder and CEO of Cerent Corporation, a leader in high-speed networking that was purchased by Cisco Systems in late 1999 for nearly $7 billion. Hatfield has also served as Vice-President (International and Marketing) for Advanced Fibre Communications, along with stints at DSC Communications and Indiana Bell Telephone.
"It's an honor to receive this award, considering the level of talent produced by the Kelley School of Business each year," said Hatfield. "I'm excited to be in such good company."
"At Kelley-Indianapolis, we pride ourselves on providing real-world business opportunities for our students," says Roger Schmenner, the Associate Dean of Kelley's Indianapolis program. "Today, so much growth is occurring in the technology and telecommunications sectors, and Michael's story is a great example of recognizing and seizing the opportunities that are available."
This year's Kelley Annual Business Conference focused on e-business and technology strategies. In addition to the distinguished alumni awards, the Conference featured speakers including Eli Lilly Chairman Sidney Taurel, Oracle Vice-President Edward J. Sanderson, and former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers.
The Kelley School of Business Indianapolis offers an evening MBA program, as well as one of the nation's first On-Line MBA programs. Located on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, Kelley takes advantage of its location in the nation's 12th largest city by providing real-world business opportunities to its students. Through a collaborative effort between students, faculty and business, Kelley-Indianapolis offers practical experience and networking that lead to extensive career opportunities.
