ANNUAL HERRON FUND-RAISER, JANUS BALL, GOES GREEN

INDIANAPOLIS - Herron School of Art is counting on the luck of the Irish this year for its annual costume ball fund-raiser. Janus Ball 2001, themed "Janus Green with Envy" will be held on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom from 7 p.m. to midnight.

Janus Ball is organized by the Friends of Herron, a community support group for the school and gallery.

"Janus Ball is THE art gala of the year," said Herron Development Director Glennda Kouts. "It's always fun because every year there is a different theme, different entertainment, and creative costumes. The Friends of Herron, led by Janus Ball Co-chairs, Jessie Mills and Mark Jakubovie, have had a blast planning the event all year long. "

Attendees of Janus Ball, known for its wild costumes, are encouraged to come dressed in creative ways fitting the theme. For last year's ball themed "In and Out," a group of guests came donned as Fox's famous "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" bride Darva Conger and groom Rick Rockwell; one guest came as Pat, the character from Saturday Night Live; and a husband and wife team dressed as the painting "American Gothic" complete with frame.

The Ball, in its twelfth year, also includes dinner, dancing, music, auctions and more. This year's silent auction will feature work from Herron students representing many of the school's various disciplines. A new addition to the evening is a live auction, where attendees can bid on prize packages including travel, jewelry, sports and arts and entertainment. Celtic band Hog Eye Navvy and dance/ rock band Trinia and the Gypsies will provide the entertainment.

The illustration, also done as a nod to her Irish heritage, is featured on the ball's invitations and posters. The drawing is available to view online at

Janus Ball was originally held in January and the Friends of Herron chose to name it after the Roman God Janus for whom the month was named. Janus, however, also defines the vision of the Ball, said Herron Public Relations Director Julie Schaefer. "Janus has two faces - one looking back at the past and the other forward to the future. Janus symbolizes looking into Herron's future and the future of art, as well as remembering Herron's history and how far we have come."

Sponsors include NUVO Newsweekly, Johnson Smith LLP, First Indiana Bank, Covance Central Laboratory Services, Bank One, DesignSmith, and Tube Processing.

Tickets to Janus Ball are $100 per person or $150 for patron level. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Jennifer Martin at (317) 920-2494.
