NEW ON-LINE SERVICE TO CONNECT STUDENTS WITH ALUMNI MENTORS

INDIANAPOLIS - Remember those undergraduate days spent wishing someone who knew the ropes could help you find your way through the jungle of career-related decisions: Am I in the right major? How do I find a job in my degree field? How can I try on a job just to see if it really fits?

A new service, sponsored by the IUPUI Career Center in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations, will offer students the ability to connect with alumni mentors who volunteer as resources for advice and information regarding careers, employers, and job search techniques.

Alumni participating in the IUPUI Alumni Mentoring Program register with JagJobs, the Career Center's jobs database, creating profiles that list pertinent information of their own choosing, such as their career field, employer, and educational background.

Using their JagJobs accounts, students can search for mentors using criteria such as the mentor's professions, education, and geographic locations.

"For students, this is an added resource to help them in their job search," said Sue Ream of the IUPUI Career Center.

Mentors can chose to provide various services, including career advising, job shadowing opportunities, mock interviews and resume review. Mentors can also determine whether students should contact them by phone, e-mail or mail, and can control the numbers of times they are contacted on a monthly basis.

Alumni interested in being mentors should contact the Career Center by e-mail at career@iupui.edu or call (317) 274-2554.
