CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK WITH INFORMATIVE EVENTS
INDIANAPOLIS
- In honor of International Education Week, IUPUI will host a variety of events
to educate the campus about the importance of engaging the global community.
International Education Week, November 12-16, is a joint effort by the U.S.
Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State to promote and celebrate
the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
"International Education Week is an important opportunity to raise campus and
community awareness of global issues and to promote international education
exchange as a way to enhance mutual understanding and acceptance," said IUPUI
Chancellor Gerald Bepko.
The IUPUI campus will host the following events:
Carnavale Internationale - Saturday, Nov. 10 from 7-midnight
The fifth annual International Banquet, co-sponsored by the International Club
and the Graduate Student Organization, will be held at the Murat Shrine Center,
520 N. New Jersey St. The banquet will feature an international buffet, entertainment
and dancing. Tickets are available from the Office of International Affairs,
UN 207, by calling (317) 274-7000. Tickets are $12 for students and $25 for
faculty and staff.
Making Meaning Out of Tragedy Forum Series: "Why is So Much Anger in the
Muslim World Directed Toward the U.S.?" - Wednesday, Nov. 14 from noon-1:30
p.m.
The forum series, sponsored by Chancellor Bepko's National Tragedy Coordinating
Council, was created to provide IUPUI students, faculty and staff an opportunity
to discuss and learn about a variety of issues related to the September 11 attacks.
The forum will be held on the lower level of University College. Hazim El-Mounayri,
assistant professor of mechanical engineering and advisor to the IUPUI Muslim
Student Association, will serve as the moderator. Panel members include Iliya
Harik, professor emeritus of Political Science at IU-Bloomington and Pierre
Atlas, adjunct professor of political science.
Safety Seminar - Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 2:30-4 p.m.
The Office of International Affairs is sponsoring this practical seminar designed
for international students and scholars to explore crime and personal safety
in the U.S. Terry Baumer, criminal justice professor and Capt. Bob True of the
IUPUI Police will look at just how prevalent crime is in the U.S., how it has
changed over time, and how it compares with statistics from other countries.
Participants will receive practical suggestions on how to stay safe in the U.S.,
and on campus in particular, and how to use the police and campus resources.
The seminar will be held in Room 115 of University College.
International Culture Hour: Pakistan - Friday, Nov. 16 from 5:30-7 p.m.
The Pakistani Student Association will host an international culture hour, sponsored
by the International Club, in Room 115 of University College. The event will
focus on Pakistani people and their culture and will include discussions, food
and socializing.
Events for IUPUI Faculty and Staff:
The Fulbright Program: International Research and Teaching Opportunities
for Faculty Members - Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 12-1:30 p.m.
Have you considered a Fulbright experience? Attend this session to hear the
experiences of IUPUI faculty Fulbright awardees and learn how you can participate.
The Fulbright international educational program is sponsored by the U.S. government
and is designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the
United States and the people of other countries..." Fulbright participants have
the opportunity to observe others' political, economic and cultural institutions,
exchange ideas, and embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare
of the world's inhabitants. David Jones, director of international development,
will present the workshop, sponsored by the Office of International Affairs
and the Office of Professional Development, in Room 1116 of University Library.
This is a "brown bag" seminar, so please feel free to bring your lunch.
Adventures in International Admissions: Foreign Admissions Processing and
Advising for Undergraduates - Thursday, Nov. 15 from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Attend this workshop, sponsored by the Office of International Affairs, to learn
more about the international undergraduate admissions paper flow process and
solutions to common problems. Specialized services for international students
including orientation, visa matters, and student employment will also be reviewed.
In addition, the workshop will highlight international recruitment at IUPUI
and how academic units support these efforts. The workshop will be held in the
Hoosier Room of the Union building.
Graduate Admissions Workshop - Friday, Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This workshop, sponsored by the Office of International Affairs and the Graduate
Office, will give an overview of the graduate admissions process, including
roles of the respective offices, the pre-application and application processes,
university fellowships and English proficiency requirements. The workshop will
be held in the Hoosier Room of the Union building.
IUPUI currently enrolls more than 800 international students from more than
100 different countries. The campus also hosts approximately 500 international
research scholars, faculty and staff each year.
All of the events are free, with the exception of the International Banquet.
