IU School of Dentistry Takes Part in National Children's Dental Access Day
|
The American Dental Association's 2nd annual "Give Kids a Smile" program on Feb. 6 celebrated National Children's Dental Access Day by offering free dental care to children in need at dental offices, clinics, and schools throughout the country.
The IU School of Dentistry once again served as a treatment site for the Indiana branch of the program, which was sponsored by the Indiana Dental Association (IDA). About 1,000 Indiana children were treated statewide during the event last year, and this year's goal was to nearly double that number, to about 1,800.
The IU dental school was one of about 90 Hoosier treatment sites in 2004, with about 200 dentists volunteering statewide along with their staff members.
The dental school also opened its doors to about a dozen community dentists and members of their staff, who joined IU's faculty, staff, and student volunteers in treating 89 children - about twice as many as last year. Treatment included dental check-ups, sealants, extractions, and restorative dentistry (fillings).
Many of the children seen at the IUSD site were Spanish speaking, so IUSD faculty, staff, and student volunteers also played invaluable roles as interpreters.
