Anantha Shekhar, M.D., Ph.D, Associate Dean for Translational Research  

IMPACT Person: Anantha Shekhar, M.D., Ph.D, Associate Dean for Translational Research, the Raymond E. Houk Professor of Psychiatry, and Professor of Pharmacology and Neurobiology, was honored as the IUPUI Impact Person of the game at the September 21st Colts game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Executive Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme joined him as Shekhar was honored.

Women & Philanthropy To be Topic of Center on Philanthropy’s 20th Annual Symposium

"Moving Women's Philanthropy Forward: Influences, Intent, Impact" will be the theme of the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University's 20th annual symposium to be held November 13-14 in Indianapolis. The event will bring together leading nonprofit and for-profit professionals, scholars, and leaders to reflect on the roles and engagement of women in the nonprofit sector.

Interest in understanding how and why women give has grown exponentially. Through innovative structures such as women's funds, giving circles, and other initiatives, women around the world are leveraging their intellectual, social, and financial capital for the common good.

Request for Diversity Funding Proposals

At the Board of Trustees meeting on September 18th, 2008, President McRobbie announced a $1 million President's University Diversity Initiative. The initiative follows upon last year's request for each campus to submit a Campus Diversity Plan outlining its campus-specific goals, objectives, and strategies for increasing the diversity of students, faculty, and staff on each of IU's campuses.

Professor William Barton

Indiana University School of Social Work Professor William Barton was given a national award Sept. 24th for his outstanding contributions to juvenile detention reform.

The award was presented the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative National Inter-Site Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis.

The announcement of the award at a packed ballroom luncheon caught Barton by surprise. His shoulders jerked back when he heard his name announced.

Defining What Museum Audiences Want Key to Producing Engaged Visitors

Defining what audiences value and find interesting would help museum officials produce what they want most - engaged visitors, according to an article that has been published in the current Journal of Museum Education, Summer 2008.

Facing increasing pressure to prove the public value of their institutions, museum officials have turned to understanding how museum visitors are actively engaged by museum exhibits and displays - as an essential goal, according to the article, "Between the Lines of Engagement" by co-authors Elizabeth Wood and Barbara Wolf.
