Chinese Official Makes Stop at IUPUI To Gain Insight into American Voters
A Chinese official on a trip to the United States included a stop at IUPUI as he sought insight into what's on the minds of Indiana and America voters about to choose a new President.
Cong Peiwu, a counselor with the Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in China, started his trip in Washington, D.C. before stopping in Indianapolis.

Inmate Free With Help of IU School of Law-Indianapolis Students Gets $4.5 Million Civil Settlement

Seven years ago, with the help of IU School of Law-Indianapolis Professor Fran Hardy and four of her students, Larry Mayes of Gary, Indiana, was set free from prison based on DNA testing.
This week a federal court approved a $4.5 million settlement for Mayes - who before his release spent 21 years in prison for a rape conviction. The U.S. magistrate agreed on Sept. 2, 2008, that the 2006 federal jury award of $9 million to Mayes could be set aside, paving the way for the settlement between the man and Hammond, Indiana, city officials, according to an Associated Press report. Mayes originally had sought $19 million in damages and legal fees from the city, according to the AP story.

If the Department of Physical Therapy at IUPUI had mailed a post-card to its friends and acquaintances this summer, it might have read: "Hope your summer is going well. Our summer definitely is."
What made the department's summer go so well is work.
During the summer, the department generated grants and contracts valued at more than $1 million. That's a million times more than the department generated as little as three years ago when it did not work on a single grant or contract.

Blood Drive Sept. 18 for Dave Williamson

A blood drive on behalf of David Williamson will be held Thursday, Sept.18, 2008, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the BS Breezeway/Courtyard.
Williamson, who has been at IUPUI since 1986, is the director of the Freshman Technology area as well as associate professor of Computer and Information Technology. Williamson was diagnosed with prostate and bone cancer in 2004. He has been battling his cancer ever since. Because his bones aren't manufacturing enough blood, he is now on a regiment of transfusions.

IUPUC Vice Chancellor Wins National Sociology Teaching Award

Jay Howard, vice chancellor and dean, has been awarded the 2008 Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Undergraduate Sociology.
The award was presented by the American Sociological Association Section on Teaching and Learning at its annual conference in Boston on August 1. Dr. Howard, also Professor of Sociology and former head of the Division of Liberal Arts, is an active member of the ASA as well as many other professional associations.

Motorsports Day Features Sarah Fisher, Student Race Car Drivers, Car Rides
As a young boy, Oner Yurtseven dreamed of growing up and one day becoming a race car driver.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, Yurtseven, now dean of the Purdue School of Engineering & Technology at IUPUI, will come close to getting his wish. He is scheduled to be the first person to take a spin around the IUPUI campus in the passenger seat of a street-legal Indy Car during the third annual Motorsports Day at IUPUI.

"Under the Tuscan Sun" Author to Speak at IUPUI

Frances Mayes, best-selling author of Under the Tuscan Sun and A Year in the World, will deliver the inaugural Efroymson Lecture on International Art, Culture and Heritage at IUPUI on October 8, 2008. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Mayes, whose remarks are titled, "Writing in Place: Travels with My Notebook," will talk about traveling and living abroad during her lecture, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room on the fourth floor of the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Boulevard, Indianapolis.

Indiana University School of Nursing Dean Appointed to National Advisory Council for Nursing Research
Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean and distinguished professor, Indiana University School of Nursing, has been appointed to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health. This is a four year appointment, ending in 2012.

Their bags are unpacked, the souvenirs from a trip to South Africa put away.
But three Indiana University School of Social Work faculty members are still trying to absorb the full impact left by the journey to an international conference.
"I didn't see anything I was not expecting, but that doesn't mean I was prepared to see it," Patricia Howes, Director of the Child Welfare Education and Training Partnership. "Their rural areas make southern Indiana look like a metropolis and I knew that, "Howes said. "But it was really different to see it."

The Games Live On
In 2001, 10,000 police officers and firefighters assembled in Indianapolis for the World Police & Fire Games. The 2008-09 Rufus and Louise Reiberg Reading Series at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will begin Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, with the award-winning author of "Drives Like a Dream" and "When the White House Was Ours" as the featured guest.
