Professor Bravo's Course Recognized by National Anti-Trafficking Organization

A class designed and taught by Karen E. Bravo, Associate Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, has been recognized nationally as a model for integrating the subject of human trafficking into the higher education syllabus.
Professor Bravo's syllabus for the course "Illicit International Markets" was selected by The Protection Project of Johns Hopkins University as a model for scholars both within and outside the United States on how to integrate the subject of human trafficking into a higher education course. Her syllabus will be posted online by The Protection Project as a resource for educators working in this critical area of inquiry.

BackPack Attack Gives Smiles, Supplies to Thousands of Children
The 2008 BackPack Attack successfully accomplished its mission of providing needed back-to-school supplies to thousands of children.
More than 425,000 supplies were collected, a new record. IUPUI was the number one donor, having collected more than 21,000 supplies from faculty, staff and students.
BackPack supplies are provided to children in every IPS school.

Join Team IUPUI for the Indiana Sports Corp Corporate Challenge
IUPUI is joining more than 80 Indianapolis businesses in the Indiana Sports Corp Corporate Challenge at the Michael Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on Saturday, September 27th.

IUPUI to Offer State's First Master's Degree in Forensic Science
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has approved the state's first master's degree program in forensic science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
The program, which leads to a degree from Purdue University, will enhance further collaborations between IUPUI and law enforcement, such as a partnership with the Indiana State Police to study what happens to explosive devices during a detonation. Faculty and student research will help law enforcement with future investigations.
As Indiana emerges as a national leader in high tech and life sciences business, the demand for highly trained scientists will grow.

NGO Leaders from Several Countries to Meet with Law School Professor at IUPUI
Traveling in the United States as part of a State Department international training program, leaders of non-governmental organizations from several countries will visit the IUPUI campus on Friday (August 15) for a special meeting with an Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis professor.
Law Professor George Edwards, founder and director of the law school's Program in International Human Rights Law, will talk with leaders of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from Bangladesh, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Nigeria, and the West Bank from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Friday in Room 267 of the law school, 530 W. New York Street. Edwards will share his insights and experiences in promoting international human rights law.

Pratibha Varma-Nelson Receives 2008 James Flack Norris Award
Pratibha Varma-Nelson, Professor of Chemistry and Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry. The award will be presented in November.

When IUPUI parents bring their youngsters to the IUPUI Center for Young Children next week to start the new semester, they'll be greeted by a couple of parents on a mission.
The mission: Encourage other parents to take advantage of the opportunities that the on-site child care service offers parents to build partnerships between home and school.
The relationship between school and home is very important, and having it start in early childhood sets the tone for the rest of the child's academic pursuits, but unfortunately, parents often fall off the radar screen when children get older, says Beth Jeglum, CYC director.
