New Associate Dean at School of Social Work is a "social worker to her soul"

Indiana University School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner has announced Dr. Virginia Majewski will become the Associate Dean of the School this academic year.
Dr. Majewski has been at West Virginia University where she served as Chairperson of the Division of Social Work for the past six years. In her new duties as Associate Dean, Dr. Majewski will provide oversight and administrative support to the School's BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. programs in social work and the AS and BS programs in Labor Studies. The School of Social Work is distinguished by having the oldest university-affiliated social work program in the nation. It currently operates programs on seven IU campuses across Indiana.

This Week on Sound Medicine
This weekend, July 26 and 27, Sound Medicine, the award-winning weekly Public Radio program hosted by Barbara Lewis, will cover certain genes that greatly increase a woman's risk of getting cancer, the declining trend of malpractice lawsuits, difficult questions about elder care and the dangers of overly-competitive youth baseball.

President Bush Appoints Victoria Champion to National Cancer Advisory Board
Victoria L. Champion, Associate Dean for Research, Edward W. and Sara Stam Cullipher Endowed Chair, Mary Margaret Walther Distinguished Professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing was recently appointed to the National Cancer Advisory Board by President George Bush. This is a six year appointment, ending in 2014.

Glazed America: IUPUI Anthropologist Examines Doughnut as Symbol of Consumer Culture
Few things say as much about our culture as the food we eat. A new book, Glazed America: A History of the Doughnut by Paul R. Mullins, Ph.D., an Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis anthropologist, explores the development of America's consumer culture through our relationship with the doughnut, beloved by many, a symbol of temptation and unhealthiness to others.
Sometime in prehistory someone dropped flour into oil and the ancestor of the doughnut was born. Since that time every culture has fried flour and many have added something sweet to the dough.

What's 43 feet long, 600 pounds, and pink? The Indy SurviveOars dragon boat. The dragon boat, which is sponsored by the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center and Clarian Health, glided up and down the downtown Canal Walk today (July 25, 2008) as part of opening festivities of the cancer center’s new $150 million patient care building.

Student Life Names 08-09 Faculty Associate

A School of Engineering & Technology faculty member will serve as the Student Life Faculty Associate during the 2008-09 school year, Student Life officials recently announced.
As faculty associate, Darrell Nickolson, a Trustee Lecturer with a split appointment between Architectural Technology and Interior Design Technology, will focus on developing strategies to enhance the academic success of residential students at IUPUI, both inside and outside the classroom. Nickolson has a strong background as a student advocate having served as faculty advisor for a number of student organizations.
Purdue School of Engineering and Technology Announces Administrative Changes
Several faculty members of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI are assuming new leadership responsibilities prior to the start of the 2008-09 school year.
Hasan Akay, Ph.D., is the interim associate dean for academic programs and research.
