NSF Early CAREER Award Winner Sapna Deo Pursues New RNA Detection Method
  Sapna Deo

Sapna Deo

Imagine a probe that could rapidly determine from the smallest possible sample whether a bioterrorist attack had occurred, or indentify whether bacteria such as E. coli or cancer were present.

And do it by causing the detection target, if present, to glow like a firefly.

Such a detection method is under development by Sapna Deo, an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology in the School of Science at IUPUI. That research, which she has pursued with the graduate students, undergraduate students and even high school students working in her lab, has earned Deo a National Science Foundation (NSF) award.

Anthony Faiola

Dental student Donald Helfert guides a Dental Summer Institute participant through one of the hands-on lab sessions.

One young participant, at age 14, had just finished junior high school. Another came equipped with a master's degree. In between were 20 high school, college, and college-bound students - and all had one thing in common: a keen interest in learning more about dentistry, and what it's like to be a student in this field.

IUPUI Professor Larry J. Zimmerman and Dr. Dorothy Lippert

An Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) professor's early career decision to rebury Native American human remains - an act then considered academic suicide - recently earned the professor international recognition for significant contributions to world archaeology.

The World Archaeological Congress (WAC) awarded its inaugural Peter J. Ucko Memorial Award to Larry J. Zimmerman, anthropology and museum studies professor in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Zimmerman is also jointly appointed with the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art as the Public Scholar of Native American Representation.

Co-Workers Wheel Maintenance Worker to Life-Saving Care

When Campus Facilities Services co-workers found Lyle Way slumped and unresponsive in his desk chair, they decided the best way to get him medical care was to rush him to the hospital – in the office chair.

His co-workers pushed Way to the University Hospital Emergency Room from the 5th floor of the Medical Science and Library building, wheeling him to an elevator, down the building’s dock ramp, and across the street to an emergency room entrance.

The rush to the hospital took only 5 to 10 minutes although it seemed like an eternity to Way’s rescue squad - Phil Burba, Rod Hadley, Rick Patrick, Nathan Perdue and Randy Scott. Way’s blood sugar level had fallen so low that emergency room staff said the quick thinking and fast action on the other men had saved Way’s life.

Later that day, Way returned to the office and thanked his buddies for their heroic actions.

New Video Feature Makes Its Debut on the IUPUI Homepage

"For Indiana, the direct effects of the mortgage crisis will probably be milder than for many other states. The housing boom was much less vigorous here, compared to the east or west coasts. But we will feel the effects of the national recession,” says Steven Russell, professor of economics in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, who formerly worked as an economist in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Russell shares his insight on the current mortgage banking crisis in a new video feature that will appear periodically on the IUPUI home page, Current News Videos. Click here to watch the video http://www.iupui.edu/~iuihome/podcasts/?episode=215 .
