Equal Opportunity Office on the Move

IUPUI's Office of Equal Opportunity, formerly the Office of Affirmative Action, is on the move.
The office is moving from its quarters in the Administration Building to Room 117 in the Union Building. The move will be completed by Tuesday, July 1. Telephone numbers for the office and staff will remain unchanged.
Kim D. Kirkland is the Director of Equal Opportunity, arriving on June 2 to assume her new duties. Kirkland was the Affirmative Action Officer and Senior Investigator responsible for monitoring compliance with federal and state equal opportunity and nondiscrimination laws and regulations at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) in Ohio.

Student Life Division Making Moves to Expand International Outreach
The creator of a nationally recognized international student engagement program at IUPUI is making a big move as part of efforts to help advance the campus's international outreach.
Effective July 1, 2008, Michelle Verduzco is relinquishing her role as director of Campus & Community Life, a unit in the Division of Student Life and Diversity at IUPUI, and will focus her time and energy full-time on international initiatives such as the "To Mexico with Love" program.

Psychology Professor to Lead Research and Graduate Education for the School of Science

School of Science Acting Dean Bart S. Ng has appointed psychology professor James M. Murphy as associate dean for research and graduate education. He will assume the position on July 1, 2008.
"Professor Murphy has compiled an outstanding record of research accomplishments in psychobiology during his 29 years at IUPUI," said Ng. "He brings to the position a wealth of experience in research management and interdisciplinary proposal development. I look forward to his leadership as the School of Science continues to enhance our research and graduate education infrastructure."

New Online Archive of Policy Research Launched
PolicyArchive (www.PolicyArchive.org), the nation's first free, comprehensive, online archive of public policy research, was launched today by the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library and the non-profit Center for Governmental Studies (CGS) with support from major U.S. charitable foundations.

Wireless Hospital Tracking System Study Needlessly Alarms Public
A newly published study that found wireless systems that track hospital medical equipment can cause potentially hazardous incidents involving lifesaving devices may have needlessly alarmed patients, their families and hospital administrators, says a Biomedical Engineering Technology professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
Barbara Christe, who directs the Biomedical Engineering Technology program in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI, said a study that she completed in March 2008 and has been accepted for publication in Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology found the wireless systems using Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) devices did not interfere with or influence the performance of commonly used medical devices such as physiological monitors and intravenous pumps in general patient care rooms.

IUPUI Mathematics Professor Honored by the Polish Academy of Sciences

The Polish Academy of Sciences will host an international conference on dynamical systems in honor of Michal Misiurewicz, a professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI and one of the world's leading researchers in the field of dynamical systems. The conference will be held June 30-July 5, 2008, in Bedlewo, Poland, and will bring together participants from more than 50 universities in 20 countries.
Dynamical systems is one of the most active areas of mathematics. It is devoted to the study of change, ranging from the regular motion of a planet's orbit around the sun to the chaotic long term behavior of weather models. Misiurewicz has made groundbreaking theoretical contributions in several branches of dynamics.

Neurological Assessment of Older Adults: A Crystal Ball to the Future
Standard neurological exams of older adults are good predictors of future brain health and quality of life. These tests should become part of the physician's routine examination of older adults say faculty from the Indiana University Center for Aging Research in an editorial in the June 23, 2008 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

IU Kelley Professor Wins 2008 Literati Network Award for Excellence
Roger W. Schmenner, Ph.D. and chief of staff for the Office of the Chancellor at the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI and best known for his expertise in the field of production, operations management and manufacturing logistics operations, was recently selected as Outstanding Paper Award Winner by the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2008.
