Preparing Future Faculty Program Guides Participants to Successful Academic, Industry Careers

Roosevelt Y. Johnson gave students and postdoctoral fellows a peak into what their future might be like if they pursue their goal of becoming faculty members at IUPUI or other college campuses.

Johnson did so by looking back on his distinguished career in a talk entitled "True Confessions of a Former Faculty Member." Johnson's talk was the keynote address of the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Summer Institute at IUPUI.

Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI Receives $200,000 Award

IUPUI has received a $200,000 award from Rolls-Royce Corporation to continue the design and testing of the next generation of aircraft engines, with a goal of creating cleaner, more efficient, and powerful engines. This is in addition to prior awards in 2006 and 2007 totaling approximately $380,000. The wave rotor combustion turbine engines could cut fuel usage and CO2 emissions in aircraft by 20 percent or more over traditional gas turbine engines being used today. They could also help make hypersonic flight to orbit more feasible.

Dr. Margaret Adamek's advice on international travel: "Go for it!"

By the time the keynote speaker finished talking about the need for schools of social work to internationalize their curriculum, Margaret Adamek was sold.

Little did she realize listening to that talk nearly two years ago that it would lead to a trip to Ethiopia where last month she taught a course on scholarly writing at Addis Ababa University.

Adamek, the director of the Indiana University School of Social Work's Ph.D program was attending the annual meeting of directors of doctoral programs at the University of Calgary in Canada in the fall of 2006 where she met Dr. Alice Johnson Butterfield of the University of Illinois at Chicago, the keynote speaker.

The Role of Giving Explored by Indiana University Physician-Author

We Make A Life By What We Give is the title of a new book that will nudge readers to think about their lives and how they can share what they have to improve their lives and the lives of others. Indiana University and Riley Hospital for Children physician-philosopher Richard B. Gunderman, M.D., Ph.D. guides readers through reflection on and discussion of the role of giving in their lives.

Judith Shea’s Job sculpture to be permanently installed at Herron

Job (2005) by artist Judith Shea (b. 1948) will be permanently installed at Herron School of Art and Design in June. The 75" x 38" x 30" bronze sculpture will be on display in the Allen Whitehill Clowes Pavilion at Herron's main entrance on New York Street.

Job was previously on loan to Herron from April 2005 to August 2007. The recent acquisition of this important work of art was made possible through the generosity of Jane Fortune, Dr. Robert R. Hesse, William L. Fortune, Jr., and Joseph D. Blakley. Herron's Dean Valerie Eickmeier says, "The Job sculpture is a dynamic work of art by a very important 20th century artist that will become an icon for the school. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of Jane, Bob, Bill, and Joe."

IU Oral Pathologist Is President-Elect of Oral Pathology Academy

IU School of Dentistry faculty member Dr. Susan L. Zunt, professor of oral pathology, will be installed as president-elect of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AOMP) during the organization's joint meeting with the International Association of Oral Pathologists next week in San Francisco.

Indiana University Foundation presents Free Ball Garden Noon Performances

Indiana University Foundation will present three free Ball Garden noon time music performances featuring musicians from the Indiana University Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI.

The performances will be from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.in the Ball Gardens area. The Ball Gardens area is located in back of Ball Annex (1226 Michigan St.) and in front of Riley Hospital outpatient main entrance on (575 West Drive). A limited number of chairs will be available. Those attending may bring a blanket or lawn chair. If it rains, the performances will be cancelled.
