Blomquist Appointed Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor William Blomquist as the next Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.

Blomquist is currently a Professor of Political Science at IUPUI, and served as Chair of the Political Science Department from 1995 to 2002. During that time he also helped develop and lead the school's certificate program in paralegal studies and minor in legal studies.

Motorsports Engineering Degree Approved at IUPUI

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has approved a bachelor's degree program in Motorsports Engineering at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The program, which had previously been approved by the Purdue University board of trustees, is now set to be offered to students beginning in the fall of 2008.

Nation’s First Ph.D.s in Philanthropic Studies Graduate From Indiana University

The first four people in the nation to earn a doctorate in Philanthropic Studies have graduated from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University's Ph.D. program, Center officials announced.

Nonprofit organizations, donors and communities will be the beneficiaries. The graduates will educate future generations of nonprofit leaders, and their research will help donors give more wisely and enable nonprofits to increase fundraising and deliver services more effectively.

Bantz today announced the selection of Khaula Murtadha as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Lifelong Learning and Executive Director of the Community Learning Network at IUPUI, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees. Murtadha is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI.

IUPUI’s Newest Ph.D. Program at the Interface between Statistics and the Life Sciences

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has approved a Ph.D. degree program in biostatistics at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The program, which is unique to Indiana and leads to a degree from Indiana University, is a collaboration of the Department of Mathematical Sciences in the School of Science and the Division of Biostatistics in the IU School of Medicine.

Schools of Science and Medicine Launch $2.9 Million National Science Foundation GK-12 Science Education Program at IUPUI

Take a $2.9 million National Science Foundation grant, mix with research graduate students at IUPUI and pour into Indianapolis Public Schools middle and high school science classrooms and outdoor learning laboratories.

This recipe, like combining baking soda and vinegar to simulate an erupting volcano, is expected to ignite interest in science that will improve science education and may lead some youngsters to pursue careers in math, science and medicine.

Lalit Khandare will discuss the fate of "untouchables" at international conference in Berlin

The idea that Lalit Khandare, a PhD student in the IU School of Social Work, received an invitation to present a paper at the Berlin Roundtables on the future of megacities isn't surprising.

By all rights, Khandare, a native of small town from central India, should never have gotten an education, let alone by on the verge of getting his PhD. According to his country's caste system, he was born as "an untouchable" or one of the Dalits or "broken people."

IUPUI Applies to Host Gubernatorial Debate

The Indiana Debate Commission is reviewing venue applications from 10 facilities throughout the state that are interested in hosting gubernatorial debates this fall, including IUPUI.

Site selection teams are visiting each of the facilities through May to review logistics, technical support, public participation possibilities, new technology innovations and other factors being assessed for fall debates.

Chronic Disease Management: Does It Improve Health and Save Money?

A study published in the May/June issue of Health Affairs reports on the first randomized trial providing a scientifically valid look at what one might expect from chronic disease management programs that serve low-income individuals. The study result provides good news for state Medicaid leaders struggling to meet the needs of individuals with chronic conditions and also suggests that some disease management efforts, even among relatively low-risk patients, may be an effective strategy.

Krauss To Direct IU Public Policy Institute

Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs today announced it has established the Indiana University Public Policy Institute. John L. Krauss, an IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs faculty member at IUPUI and former Indianapolis deputy mayor, will direct the Institute.
