Joseph Taylor Naming Dedication Ceremony To Be Held May 19

The IUPUI community will gather at 4:30 p.m. May 19 in the courtyard in front of University College to honor the memory of one of its founders, Dr. Joseph T. Taylor.
The event will include remarks by Chancellor Charles R. Bantz and Dr. Monroe Little, Jr., Afro-American Studies and Department of History in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI and a reception.

IUPUI Police Swear In New Officers

The IUPUI Police Department on May 5 swore in three police officers and one police sergeant, bringing the number of the department's sworn officers to 33.
Isaac McLaurin, Thomas Remender and John Benton are IUPUI's newest police officers. John Coy is a newly sworn police sergeant. Bringing more than 24 years of law enforcement experience to the IUPUI Police Department, the four men will strengthen the department in its work of making IUPUI a safe place.

Herron School of Art and Design to Install Jill Viney Work
Herron School of Art and Design will install New York Artist Jill Viney's "Barrow" on Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at approximately noon at the northeast entrance to Eskenazi Hall, weather permitting. The outdoor sculpture is a silvery hemisphere with two archways into a dim interior. The piece is molded fiberglass with a double wall. Sandwiched in between on mesh, one side has been developed darkly, the other shiny and light.

Media Arts and Science student dons army fatigues in service to nation
William F. (Freddy) Barnes is hardly your typical Media Arts and Science (MAS) student at IUPUI. While his fellow undergrads are busy with finals and Facebook, Freddy busies himself preparing for another escort mission along the dangerous roadways of Iraq. Barnes is an active-duty sergeant with the Indiana Army National Guard, currently serving in an undisclosed location in Iraq.

National Art Museum of Sport Only Art Museum Represented in Sports Museum of America

Small sculptures loaned by the National Art Museum of Sport to the new Sports Museum of America are featured in NAMOS’ display.
|
The National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) at University Place - IUPUI is the only art museum participating in the new Sports Museum of America (SmA) which opened May 7, 2008, at 26 Broadway in Lower Manhattan.
In addition to a display in the new SmA Hall of Halls, NAMOS is represented by a selection of paintings and sculptures in the event space of the new museum.

IUPUI Student Lands Pixar Residency, Will Assist Toy Story 3 Production

Following the telephone call confirming his selection as an animator for Pixar Animation Studios, Frank Tai confessed that he couldn't sleep later that night. The 26-year-old graduate student says he was just too excited about joining one of the animation industry's leading production studios.
"I couldn't believe it at first," said Tai, who will graduate in May with a master's degree in Media Arts and Science from the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI. "To know that a company like Pixar has such confidence in my talent as an animatoris just overwhelming."

Trip To Brazil Opens Eyes of BSW Student to Future Possibilities

On a recent trip to Brazil led by Labor Studies Assistant Professor Bill Mello, Katina West became a firm believer in a tonic that could improve the world.
It's called hope.
West, an undergraduate in the Indiana University School of Social Work program, is used to seeing lots of people who seem hopeless about participating in decisions that affect their lives. "They feel what's the use," West said.
So, when she saw a flier about Mello's trip to Brazil to see first-hand how labor unions have joined with other groups to create grass-roots programs to give people a voice in their communities, West decided to go along.
