John Graham to lead IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs

John D. Graham, a former Harvard faculty member and top official with the White House Office of Management and Budget, has been named dean of the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The appointment, subject to approval by the IU Board of Trustees, was announced today by Charles Bantz, chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. It takes effect Aug. 1.

2008 Purdue Grand Prix starts

 

When the 2008 Purdue Grand Prix starts at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (April 16, 2008), two IUPUI cars and their drivers, will take to the track along with 31 cars from the Purdue West Lafayette campus.

The #25 IUPUI kart driven by Jon Laski will start in the 8th position, while the #70 IUPUI kart driven by IUPUI Motorsports Club President, Lynsey Tilton, will roll off in the 22nd starting spot. All other cars are from Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

Mary L. Fisher Appointed Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Empty Holster Protest at IUPUI

During the week of April 21-25, 2008, IUPUI students will participate in the Second National Empty Holster protest here on campus. These students are members of the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) and will attend classes wearing EMPTY holsters. This symbolic protest is a result of state laws and campus policies that prohibit concealed weapons on college campuses in the hands of law - abiding citizens, and more specifically, concealed weapons permit holders.

Students participating in this protest will be wearing EMPTY holsters that are to be fully visible. Protestors will go about their daily activities and should not create any unnecessary disturbance. Please be advised that these students pose no threat to campus safety and are not carrying weapons.

IUPUI Media Arts and Science Student Nabs Prestigious Smithsonian Internship

The Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Photographic Services has selected Leana Kruska, a senior majoring in Media Arts and Science (MAS), for a summer internship in electronic imaging. The Louisville, KY native will spend about three months in Washington D.C. preparing electronic copies of historic photos for use by historians, documentary film makers, and the general public.

Kruska credits Beth Lykins, MAS lecturer, and Brian Benedict, IUPUI Informatics student services associate, with helping her land the highly sought after internship.

Graduation Scheduled April 16 for Students in Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program

Inside-Out Graduation Ceremony

Inmates and college students learn together in the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, a collaboration of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Indiana's Plainfield Re-Entry Educational Facility.

This Wednesday, April 16, they will graduate together. The Indiana Department of Correction's Plainfield facility will host a ceremony, starting at 9 a.m., for the 17 students who completed the semester-long course. Family members, IUPUI faculty and facility staff will attend.

Four IUPUI Faculty Members Receive 2008 FACET Awards

Four Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis faculty members are among the 17 faculty from throughout the Indiana University system who are recipients of 2008 Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) awards.

The annual FACET awards recognize faculty who have demonstrated their exceptional commitment to teaching and learning through self-evaluation, course preparation, research, instructional skills and student impact.

Donors, Volunteers Honored at IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Event

Donors and volunteers who have contributed to excellence in a school or program at IUPUI were honored today (April 17) at the 20th annual IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Awards ceremony.

In honoring the donors and volunteers, IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz said, "Philanthropy enables us to seize the opportunities that propel both our campus and our city forward."

Confucius Institute To Celebrate Grand Opening

The Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, Central Indiana's premier Institute for teaching Chinese language and culture, will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, April 25 at IUPUI. The Institute, based in Cavanaugh Hall Room 129, will have an open house starting at 10:00 a.m. Then at 1pm the opening ceremony will begin in Lecture Hall 102. Guest speakers include IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz, Sun Yat-sen University President Daren Huang, Mayor Greg Ballard, and IU Vice-President Dean of the IU Medical School Craig Brater.

Social Work Student Travels To South Africa To Explore Developmental Disabilities Advocacy

Michelle Kellogg knew she was about to set off on a trip she had dreamed about for months as she settled into her seat on the plane.

Even so, when the cabin door closed Kellogg had one overriding emotion - she was terrified.

Kellogg, a senior in the Indiana University Bachelor of Social Work program, was setting off for her senior practicum in South Africa. After months of planning, the final details had finally fallen into place about a week before the school year was to start.

She was to work with a South African agency, the Association for Persons with Disabilities, and more importantly get a first-hand look at how another country's policies affect the daily lives of people with developmental disabilities.

Like soap bubbles blown across a crimson sky, dozens of circles - some wood, others of Plexiglas with text or photographs - seem to float along the painted wall in a Campus Center corridor.

Together they form a timeline tracing the history of the IUPUI campus from the days before Indiana University and Purdue University merged their Indianapolis-based extensions to create Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis in 1969.
