Improving Learning at IUPUI is About Data

Chancellor Bantz accepting award |
IUPUI's approach to improving learning can be summed up in three words: data, data, data.
Using centralized data and analysis services housed in the Office of Planning and Institutional Improvement, the campus has systematically assessed outcomes, evaluated programs and conducted institutional research in a manner that has won praise from data-driven business professionals and higher education organizations alike.
IUPUI's practice of "Building a Culture of Evidence to Improve Learning" recently received an honorable mention from the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement for Higher Education (NCCI) when that organization announced its 2008 Leveraging Excellence Awards. The NCCI advances sustainable excellence in higher education by promoting the practice and discipline of continuous improvement across all academic and administrative functions.

IUPUI administrators and educators approach virtually every proposed program or initiative with two questions, said Trudy Banta, Senior Advisor to the Chancellor for Academic Planning and Evaluation. "Where is the evidence the program or initiative is needed and what evidence will be collected to show it is successful?"
Systematic use of evidence-based decision-making for more than a decade has transformed the campus, beginning with the creation of University College in 1997 to better serve entering students to the construction of a $56 million Campus Center, which opened in January 2008.

Philosophy Professor Edits "Battlestar Galactica" Text for Sci-Fi Fans and Non-Fans Alike

Assistant Professor Jason T. Eberl
IUPUI Assistant Professor Jason T. Eberl loves a good, special-effects-laden space battle as much as the next science fiction fan, but he also knows a good thinking man's plot when he sees one.
This summer, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis students in Eberl's Philosophy Through Pop Culture course - co-taught with colleague George Dunn - will explore chapters of Eberl's latest book, along with clips of the Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica." The TV clips and the IUPUI professor's writings will serve as supplements to the students' readings of the core teachings of key philosophical thinkers.
