Ng Selected as Acting Dean of Purdue School of Science

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz announced today the selection of Bart Ng as Acting Dean of the Purdue School of Science at IUPUI.

Ng, who holds the Marvin L. Bittinger Chair in Mathematical Sciences at IUPUI and is IUPUI Faculty President, succeeds Dr. William F. Bosron, PhD, Chancellor's Professor and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology in the IU School of Medicine. Bosron has served as interim dean of the School of Science since August 2006. Bosron will return to his work at the IU School of Medicine and research with colleagues in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Indiana Alcohol Research Center.

Kim Stewart-Brinston will serve as Interim Director of the IUPUI Multicultural Center, IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz announced today.

Given her outstanding record in leading multicultural outreach efforts of the campus as the director of the Office of Multicultural Outreach, Bantz said Stewart-Brinston is the ideal candidate for the post.

She will begin her new duties February 15, and is expected to serve in that capacity for six months.

Lecture Series Augments Marching Toward Justice Exhibit, First Speakers Announced

A law and education expert; and the great-great-granddaughter and biographer of Madam C. J. Walker are the first two speakers in a lecture series being held in conjunction with an IUPUI exhibit on race, constitutional law, and the fight for civil rights.

The IUPUI Marching Toward Justice Lecture Series opens Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2008, with a presentation by Indiana University School of Law Professor Kevin Brown.

IUPUI Informatics Professor is Recipient of Prestigious Intercampus Research Award

A research proposal submitted by Gunther Schadow, associate professor, IU School of Informatics, is one of five projects selected recently for funding by the Intercampus Applied Research Program (IARP) Awards. IARP is a joint initiative between Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and Purdue University-West Lafayette to support practical, world-class research. Dr. Schadow is also a Regenstrief Institute investigator, and co-director of the Signature Center for Computational Diagnostics.

Social Work Faculty, Students, Professionals Make Most of Advocacy Day
  Social work students, faculty and other professionals during the annual advocacy day at the Indiana State House

"Thank you," was the resounding message Indiana legislators presented to hundreds of social work students, faculty and other professionals during the annual advocacy day at the Indiana State House.

A huge crowd not only filled 300 chairs set out for them in the north atrium of the State House, but others had to stand while some people even leaned over a balcony railing from the floor above to listen to speakers.

The 8th annual LEAD (Legislative Education and Advocacy Day), an event planned by a group of professionals working through the National Association of Social Workers- Indiana Chapter, brought participants from across the state to Indianapolis.

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce the formation of the Consortium for Learning and Scholarship (CLS), a strategic alliance among three key campus centers: (a) the Center for Research and Learning, (b) the Center for Service and Learning, and (c) the Center for Teaching and Learning.

IUPUI Informatics Professors Research Medical Record Text-Mining

Malika Mahoui and Josette Jones, both assistant professors with the IU School of Informatics at IUPUI, know that medical discoveries and health care improvements lay buried in the mountains of digital data generated daily by hospitals, clinics, doctors and nurses. Thanks to a funding grant from the National Institutes of Health, Mahoui and Jones are helping Dr. Patrick Jamieson, Logical Semantics, Inc., build computer tools to mine those data.
