Chancellor Announces Selection of Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration
IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz announced today the selection of University of Toledo Vice President Dawn Rhodes as Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at IUPUI, pending approval of the IU Board of Trustees.
Rhodes, Vice President for Administration at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, will assume her new duties at IUPUI in June. Rhodes joined the University of Toledo in 1992, leaving in 1998 to become Vice President for Business and Finance at Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia. She returned to the University of Toledo in 2000 as Associate Vice President for Planning and Analysis.

Adverse Weather Policy Change
IUPUI has adopted a policy change concerning closing of the campus in the event of adverse weather. When adverse weather conditions force cancellation of IUPUI classes, the campus will close.
"IUPUI administrators have reviewed the approach to campus closures in the event of an adverse weather situation, and have updated procedures which align campus closure with the cancellation of classes," said, Ellen Poffenberger, Assistant Vice Chancellor forHuman Resources Administration..."

Chinese ambassador to U.S. to speak in Indianapolis on Feb. 22
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Zhou Wenzhong, China's ambassador to the United States, will speak Friday, Feb. 22, at the University Conference Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. His speech is being presented by IU's Kelley School of Business.
Zhou, who has been in his current post since 2005, will speak on the topic "China's Peaceful Development and U.S.-China Relations." The program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. He originally had planned to speak in Indianapolis last November, but had to postpone the event due to a scheduling conflict.

Taylor Symposium Tackles the "You Talkin’ to Me?" of Politics
As the nation rides out a history-making presidential election year that has everyone talking, the annual Joseph T. Taylor Symposium will turn a spotlight on political messages and how society hears them.
The 19th annual Taylor Symposium will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in the multipurpose room at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m.

Indiana Youth Services Panel Takes Testimony
Indiana University School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner said Monday that all Hoosiers would benefit from the work of a newly created task force, the Commission on Disproportionality of Youth Services.
The commission, of which Patchner is chair, held its first meeting Monday as it set out to review practices and policies of services to youths in the child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education systems.

IUPUI offers new study abroad program in China
Students now have the opportunity to participate in a Summer Chinese Language Instruction program at Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou, China.
The program, offered by the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis and the IUPUI Department of World Languages and Cultures, includes not only language instruction but also lets students travel to Beijing and visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and other significant sites in the Beijing area.

Forensic Science Expert to Head IUPUI Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology
Nationally-recognized forensic science expert Jay A. Siegel will head the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) beginning February 1.
"Jay Siegel's record of excellence in forensic science and chemistry education, as well as his efforts to translate academic research to industrial and law enforcement applications, makes him an ideal leader for the department," said William F. Bosron, interim dean of the School of Science. "His dedication to promoting interdisciplinary study will take the chemistry program to the forefront of research and academic activity."

Biographer to Discuss Basketball Legend/Civil Rights Pioneer McLendon
Kansas City Art Institute American studies Professor Milton Katz will discuss the life and legacy of basketball legend and civil rights pioneer John B. McLendon during a Black History Month program on Feb. 5, 2008, at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Professor Katz is the author of "Breaking Through," the first biography of McLendon, who was the last living protégé of basketball's inventor, Dr. James Naismith, according to the publisher's notes.
