Chancellor Announces 10 New Signature Centers Ten proposals have been selected for funding in the second round of the Signature Centers Initiative at IUPUI, bringing the total number of potential IUPUI signature centers to 29, announced IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz.

IUPUI Basketball Coach Seeks To Raise 40,000 Pairs of Shoes for Impoverished Kids
IUPUI Basketball Coach Ron Hunter will stride onto the gymnasium floor on January 24 as the Jaguars take to the court to battle Oakland barefoot. He hopes many of the IUPUI students attending the Jaguars basketball game will be shoeless as well.
By coaching shoeless, and having students barefoot, Hunter hopes to draw attention to impoverished children around the world who have no shoes and an organization that's trying to do something about it.

Weekly Lunches Feature Talks with IUPUI Coaches Hunt and Hart
Jaguars Athletics invites the IUPUI community to talk X's and O's with IUPUI head basketball coaches Ron Hunter and Shann Hart at the weekly Coaches' Corner luncheon at the Faculty Club in the University Place Conference Center and Hotel, 850 W. Michigan St.
Coaches' Corner will take place weekly through March 5. Each luncheon will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Faculty Club. The cost is $10. Coaches Hunt and Hart will share accounts of the previous week's Jaguars hoops action and provide scoops on upcoming games.

Four finalists have been selected for the position of dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University and will meet with faculty, staff, students and campus officials in Bloomington and Indianapolis starting next week.

Social Work Professor Wins Praise from Judge
Bill Barton has the usual titles: B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. Now, he's got a new one - "Champion for Children."
Marion Juvenile Court Judge Marilyn Moores bestowed the title on Barton, a professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work at IUPUI, for his contributions to reforms at the Marion County Juvenile Center in Indianapolis.
Barton, who specializes in juvenile justice issues, was a key player in devising a new assessment tool to determine which juveniles need to be locked up pending a court hearing.

Indy Law Student Takes On "Who Wants To Be Millionaire"
Blake Howell, a first-year student at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, located on the IUPUI campus, will be a contestant on the "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire," show airing locally at noon Monday (Jan. 21, 2008) on WXIN-TV, Fox 59.

Karl Wirsum Exhibit Opens
More than 100 works of art by renowned artist Karl Wirsum will be on exhibit at the Eleanor Prest Reese and Robert B. Berkshire Galleries from January 18 through March 1. Karl Wirsum: winsome works(some) opens to the public Friday, January 18 at 5:00 p.m. at Herron School of Art and Design, 735 West New York Street, Indianapolis, on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). Wirsum will deliver the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation Visiting Artist Lecture in the Basile Auditorium from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Also, he will be present at the public opening reception through 8:00 p.m.

Todd Reynolds and Luke Dubois will make a rare Indianapolis appearance for a concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7 in Concert Hall of the Informatics and Communications Technology Complex, 535 West Michigan Ave. The concert will be a multi-media extravaganza combining, video, electronics and virtuoso solo performing.
Cost is $10 for general admission, $5 for students.

IUPUI Campus Alum Headed Back Into Space
David A. Wolf, a 1982 graduate of the IU School of Medicine at IUPUI, is headed back into outer space.
Wolf, featured in a 2006 issue of IUPUI Magazine, will make his fourth trip into space for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in a 2009 mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The most up-to-date version of the official IUPUI Campus Map is now available online.
The 2008 Campus Map, available at www.iupui.edu/maps, is more user-friendly, featuring easier to read graphics; provides a more complete listing of current campus-owned and leased buildings; and includes more neighboring institutions.
Schools, departments and other campus units are encouraged to download the 2008 Campus Map to their Web sites.

IUPUI Center Provides Staff for Government Reform Commission
Gov. Mitch Daniels knew where to turn when he wanted to find professional help for the Indiana Commission on Local Government Reform, which he appointed last summer.
He asked the Indiana University Center for Urban Policy and the Environment at IUPUI. And the center delivered -- providing staff support and other services to enable the commission to produce a comprehensive report and bold recommendations after only four months.

Tourism Department Receives $650,000 in Awards
IUPUI's Tourism, Conventions and Event Management (TCEM) Department has received three awards totaling $650,000 from the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation to fund a new lecture series, provide study abroad opportunities for its students and extend support for an annual cultural tourism conference that features a $25,000 prize.
