Dr. Murtadha Resigns Post; To Spend Spring Semester on Sabbatical
Dr. Khaula Murtadha, executive associate dean of the IU School of Education on the IUPUI campus, has resigned her position, effective December 31, 2007. She will spend the spring 2008 semester on sabbatical leave.
Dr. Christine H. Leland, professor of language education and associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Education at IUPUI, has agreed to serve as interim executive associate dean during Murtadha's sabbatical.
In a message to colleagues, Dr. Murtadha cited complex reporting lines with accountability to three different administrators making decision making complicated, time consuming and far less efficient. "The main reason for this decision is the structure between Indianapolis and Bloomington. In its current state administrative responsibilities are untenable, particularly given the growth of the School of Education here in Indianapolis."
Gerardo Gonzalez, dean of the Indiana University School of Education and IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz, both praised the work and accomplishments of Dr. Murtadha.
The IU School of Education has experienced remarkable growth and prosperity on the IUPUI campus during Murtadha's administration, Gonzales said. "Under Khaula’s leadership, the Indianapolis program has been able to recruit excellent new faculty and achieve national distinction as a premiere urban education program."
As chief administrator of the IU School of Education program on the IUPUI campus since 2001, Murtadha has played a significant role in advancing IUPUI's mission and extending the reach of the campus into the community, Bantz said. "The passion of Dr. Murtadha for IUPUI, the future of education and for identifying the significant role that urban schools play in shaping the scholars of the future is truly outstanding." The Chancellor acknowledged the complexity of working in the two campus structure and stated that action will be taken to facilitate the relationships between the campuses.
The School of Education at IUPUI received the 2006 American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education's Best Practice Award in Support of Diversity, he noted. In the last five years, the School increased its degree productivity from 173 baccalaureate and 115 masters degrees to 243 and 180 respectively, making it the sixth largest program among the 18 degree-granting academic units at IUPUI, he added.
