Weekend Closings of Michigan Street
Work crews will close lanes of Michigan Street from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, as they work on the Michigan Street Bridge and install storm lines at the new IU Cancer Center.

Service in the City: About 65 IUPUI students participated in the Office of Community Services’ third annual Service in the City project held Sept. 7, 2007. The student volunteers started the day with a guided tour of Indianapolis that included stops at White River State Park, Indianapolis Artsgarden and Madame Walker Theatre. After lunch they spend about three hours performing various tasks at four sites around the city, including a house in the 1600 block of North Arsenal. Rebuilding the Wall, Inc., is refurbishing the building to make homeownership a reality for a low-income family. IUPUI students are shown tearing down a wall of the building during the first stage of the rebuilding project.

IUPUI Announces 2007-08 Men's Basketball Schedule
INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and head basketball coach Ron Hunter announced the Jaguars' 2007-08 basketball schedule today, headlined by a Division I record 15 home games this season. IUPUI's home slate includes marquee matchups with Massachusetts (12/1), Western Michigan (12/15) and new NCAA Division I member Florida Gulf Coast (12/17).

Study Reveals Best Bests for Streaming Live Video
A study evaluating the quality and performance of the most widely available online video streaming technologies has found that VideoLAN's VLC media player consistently outperformed its peers in a series of real-world, real-time experiments. A team of faculty and staff researchers from Indiana University's School of Informatics at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the IUPUI Testing Center conducted the ten-month-long study during which experiences with the technologies from both the producer perspective and user perspective were examined.

$1.25M Lilly Grants to Fund Scholars in Religion, Spirit & Place Festival
Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded two units of the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University -Purdue University Indianapolis grants totaling $1.25 million.
The Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture received a five-year grant in excess of $850,000 for its Young Scholars in Religion Program. The funding will allow the center to continue and expand the program that conducts annual seminars that help new religious studies professors across the country improve their teaching and research skills.

Law School Alumnus to Argue Pro Bono Case before U.S. Supreme Court
Two years ago, IU School of Law-Indianapolis alumnus Todd Vare agreed to represent one Efrain Santos before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals on a pro bono basis.
In a rare turn of events, that act of community service has catapulted the Indianapolis attorney to what many would consider the pinnacle of a law career.
On Oct. 3, 2007, Vare will argue on behalf of Santos and a co-respondent before the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.

IUPUI Natatorium Director Named Lugar Health and Fitness Award Recipient
Julie McKenney, director of the Natatorium and Carroll Stadium at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), has been selected as a 2007 Dick Lugar Health and Fitness Award winner.
The award, which is being given in conjunction with the 29th Annual Dick Lugar Community Run, Walk at Butler University, honors individuals whose dedication and commitment to fitness and health awareness enrich their communities. The award ceremony will take place at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 in Hinkle Fieldhouse on the Butler University campus in Indianapolis.

Grant will fund development of ELL teaching at IU, Indianapolis Public Schools
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University School of Education has received a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund a partnership between the School of Education at IUPUI and the Indianapolis Public Schools to implement a five-year project to better prepare teachers of English Language Learners before they begin their careers, develop skills of current teachers, and revise teaching methods of IU faculty.

Top IUPUI Faculty to Present at Cutting Edge Lecture Series
The IUPUI Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce its Cutting Edge Lecture Series for fall of 2007. This series will give the opportunity for the community to engage in dialogues with top university professors about rapidly changing fields of inquiry.

Lecturer to Speak on Psychological of Mortality
Indiana University's School of Informatics kicks off its 2007 Informatics Colloquia with two lectures by Jamie Arndt, associate professor of psychology, University of Missouri, Columbia.
Dr. Arndt, a renowned expert on terror management theory, will deliver From Transience to Transcendence: The Psychological Impact of the Awareness of Mortality, Thursday, September 20, 12:00-1:00 PM, at IUPUI, University Library, Room 0130; and Friday, September 21, 3:00-4:00 PM, at IU Bloomington, Psychology Building, Room 128.
