Thailand Connections: IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz (second from left) is shown greeting Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, president of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) of Bangkok, Thailand. Thamrongthanyawong and two NIDA Graduate School of Business administrators, Narumon Saardchom (left), and Aekkachai Nittayagasetwat, (second from right), met with IUPUI officials recently. IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties Uday Sukhatme (right) also participated in the meeting.
Thamrongthanyawong spent a semester at IUPUI as a SPEA faculty member about a decade ago. He and other NIDA faculty are engaged in the work of re-writing the Constitution of Thailand in anticipation of national elections in December and the restoration of civilian government following the coup by the military last summer.
Indiana University helped found NIDA 40 years ago. IUPUI has maintained strong ties with NIDA since 1987 when then IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor Howard Schaller, a member of Ford Foundation at the time it funded NIDA's creation, led a delegation to Thailand.
