Herron Department To Serve As Model for Civic Engagement in the Curriculum
Academic leaders at University of Delaware were awarded a research and travel grant By the Imaging America consortium to visit the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI to study its approach to civic engagement in the curriculum.
UD faculty members identified Herron’s Department of Visual Communication as a leading model for educating citizen-professionals.
The UD proposal stated, “The outcome of the visit will be to help us plan a visual communications program that incorporates the stated goals of Imagining America. This includes making civic engagement work an essential part of pedagogy in the institution, rather than considering it “volunteer work” that is not relevant to a student’s future career...

HSPA Honors James Brown, Journalism Dean
The Hoosier State Press Association honored James W. Brown, executive associate dean of the Indiana University School of Journalism at IUPUI, with its 2006 Distinguished Service Award Wednesday during its Governor’s Reception, part of the association’s Annual Meeting and Government Conference, at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown.
Gov. Mitch Daniels presented the traveling trophy to Brown following a citation for his years of service to HSPA, professional journalists across Indiana and his college students.
“While examining his service to the professional journalism community in Indiana and HSPA itself, one should remember his efforts also benefit citizens and society at large – locally, statewide and nationally,” HSPA Foundation Director Karen Braeckel said. “His willingness to share his knowledge and creativity both in and outside the classroom directly affects the very method of disseminating information...

From Custodian To Professor: A Work in Progress
In every building on campus, at all hours of the day, there are employees on campus working. These people help shape the campus for all who work and learn here. Sometimes though, the campus helps shape the employee. This is the case for Nathaniel Spaulding.

Art Museum Offers Prints of Peyton Manning Watercolor
Sports artist James Fiorentino's watercolor of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning that hangs in the National Art Museum of Sport is available in a limited edition of hand-pulled giclee prints in honor of the Indianapolis Colts’ trip to Super Bowl XLI.
The prints are $200 for those signed by the artist, and $300 for “artist’s remarque” (added sketching). Proceeds from sale of the 18 by 23-inch giclee prints will benefit the Museum located in University Place on the IUPUI campus. Prints will go on sale Friday, January 26.

Furniture Design Students Bring Talent & Creativity to The Home Show
Herron's furniture design students are under the spotlight this weekend as they display their studio art furniture in the Indianapolis Home Show's Designer Showcase.
Studio art furniture is one-of-a-kind and handcrafted, built with form, original design and function in mind. This year's collection includes tables, chairs, benches, cabinets and more, made of exotic and domestic woods and other mixed media such as metal and glass. All pieces are exceptionally well made, and gallery-quality. Many are available for sale.
Check out the display today through Sunday, Jan. 28, in the Designer's Showcase South Pavilion, Booth 6304 at the Home Show, Indianapolis State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th St. Hours are: Today, until 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Admission is $9 for adults; $4 for children, ages 7 -12. Children 6 and under are admitted free of charge. |
