“Whispering Black” Program to Encourage Dialogue on Race
"Slavery is over. Let's move on and forget about the past." "I am not racist."
"Minorities already receive preferential treatment - what about me?"
Have you heard statements like these? Activist, author and filmmaker Molly Secours addresses the hushed tones and exposes the "code talk" often used in discussions of racism in the presentation “Whispering Black.”
Campus & Community Life, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the University Student Government are partnering to bring “Whispering Black” to the IUPUI campus at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, in the Lilly Auditorium of University Library.
Secours illustrates how avoiding meaningful racial discussions only furthers the divide between whites and non-whites, which maintains the benefits and injustices of "white privilege." The IUPUI presentation of “Whispering Black” will address issues of racism, white privilege, and the IUPUI campus climate specifically. The event is designed to promote a continued open dialogue among students, faculty and staff.
