IUPUI Celebrates King Holiday
IUPUI faculty, staff and students celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner on Sunday, Jan. 15; and the annual Day of Service on Jan. 16.
Community guests attending the dinner, which sold out at 720 tickets, included poet and 2002 Grammy nominee Mari Evans (shown with IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculties, William M. Plater).
Members of the African Community International Inc. honored dinner keynote speaker Dr. Mae C. Jemison with a gift of sculpture. The presentation recognized Jemison, the first African American woman astronaut, for her contributions to health care in West Africa.
More than 450 volunteers attended the Day of Service Celebration Breakfast at Hope Education Center prior to reporting to work at local service agencies. Volunteers performed various services throughout the community including sorting donated clothing at Horizon House.
IU President Adam Herbert was a scheduled speaker at Washington Community School's Peace in the Street, Stop Hatin', Start Celebratin' 13th Annual MLK Youth Breakfast.

IUPUI United Way Goal Within Reach
IUPUI is just $5,000 from reaching its 2005 United Way campaign goal of $335,000.
More than 1,050 IUPUI employees have committed pledges to the IUPUI United Way Campaign. As part of an IUPUI FINAL PUSH CAMPAIGN, campaign organizers are challenging 500 people to make pledges of $10 each. Pledges can be made online at http://www.iupui.edu/ ~uwaycamp or pledge cards can be sent to: United Way campaign, AO 126.
