After Hours: Meet John F. Sharp, Director, Counseling & Psychological Services
The first thing you have to know about John is racing. Any kind of racing – Indy cars, NASCAR, hydroplanes – basically any two or more (typically noisy) things that chase the same checkered flag. That’s his passion.
The second thing you have to know is that John is a craftsman, both professionally and personally, and that is also his passion. Whether it’s helping a client in therapy turn the corner, building a racing trailer from the ground up or putting the finishing grind on a four-blade propeller, John approaches every task with his eye on achievement.
John’s models were his parents, hardworking stoics from rural eastern Indiana who never met a project they had to outsource. His dad was a school principal, his mom, a teacher.
When John’s not working, you’ll often find him in one of three places: at a boat race, in the workshop preparing for a boat race or watching racing on television. This summer he won the National Boat Racing Association National Championship for his class, “Super E Hydro.” He’s constantly cutting, grinding and welding metal, and like his parents, takes on every project himself.
