BONO BRINGS AIDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN TO IUPUI COMMUNITY
U2's Bono was a featured speaker at an HIV/AIDS awareness meeting held Dec. 5 at the IU Department of Public Health, housed at the Regenstrief Health Center.
Following Bono's presentation, Dr. Stephen Jay, chair of the Public Health Department, presented the singer with a certificate of appreciation honoring him for visionary leadership and outstanding contributions to global public health.
Bono, along with actress Ashley Judd, comedian Chris Tucker, and others visited Indianapolis to promote HIV/AIDS awareness. Their visit was part of the Heart of America Tour sponsored by Debts, AIDS, Trade in Africa (DATA), an organization created to raise awareness about crises in Africa. The group held meetings at the Department of Public Health, the City-County Building, and the Madame Walker Theatre. About 1,000 community leaders and others interested in the global AIDS crisis attended the event at the Madame Walker Theatre.
