Bantz Begins Duties as Chancellor
Charles R. Bantz has arrived on campus to officially begin his duties as IUPUI's fourth chancellor.
Bantz was appointed the successor to Gerald Bepko January 31, 2003 by the Indiana University Board of Trustees, effective June 1. Bantz also was named vice president for long-range planning for IU.
A native of South Dakota and educated at the University of Minnesota (B.S., M.A.) and Ohio State University (Ph.D), Bantz was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, and professor of communication at Wayne State University from August 2000 to May 2003.
He is an organizational communication expert, having published on organizational behavior, culture, and change. He has applied his scholarship to practice in his positions as chair, vice provost, director, provost, and journal editor.
His disciplinary leadership is evident in his election to numerous posts in national and international organizations, in receiving an award for his book Understanding Organizations and his election to the editorship of Communication Monographs.

Bantz is married to Sandra Petronio, who will join IUPUI's faculty with appointments in the Department of Communication Studies and the Center on Bioethics at the IU School of Medicine.
The appointment of Bantz as chancellor was the culmination of a national search conducted by a 30-member committee, chaired by John Walda, IU's executive director of federal relations and corporate partnerships. Indiana University School of Nursing Dean Angela McBride served as vice chair of the committee.
When he met with reporters shortly after his appointment was announced, Bantz commented that replacing a "truly gifted individual" like Bepko who had served as chancellor for 17 years would be difficult. "I assume there will be a lot of uncertainty about that. One of the things that will be important for me to do is give people a chance to see me and talk to me. For me to hear them is really key."
William Plater, executive vice chancellor and dean of the faculties, has served as acting chancellor.
