Three teams from the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI put their basic utility vehicles to the test during the third annual Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV) Design Competition held May 10 in Zionsville. The national competition, sponsored by the Institute for Affordable Transportation, provides engineering students an opportunity to build and test vehicles in rough terrain,

all for the sake of producing vehicle designs that may be economical and reliable for rural areas of developing countries. The IUPUI teams placed fourth, sixth and seventh out of 18 teams.

Beginning Monday, May 19, 2003, construction work to the campus utility infrastructure will begin in the area of Middle Drive and Barnhill Drive. This project, which will continue until the middle of August, is required to support Clarian Health's expansion of Riley Hospital for Children.
A pedestrian walkway will be provided on the east side of the current Barnhill pedestrian walkway and on the south side of the current Middle Drive walkway. The pedestrian walkway will not be wide enough to accommodate service cart traffic.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Herron School of Art unveiled the official logo for the 2004 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race earlier this week. The logo, designed by Greg Beall, a junior in Herron School of Art's visual communication program, will be used in a variety of print and electronic media to promote the race.

Track officials were presented with several different sketches from six Herron students in Associate Professor Paula Differding's Profession Design Practice class.

Computer Program Predicts Growth Patterns In Central Indiana
A computer simulation tool that predicts growth patterns in Central Indiana is now available for public use. The Land Use in Central Indiana Model (LUCI), developed by John Ottensmann, professor at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI, may be viewed at various demonstration sites this month. Demonstrations are scheduled on the IU campuses in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Columbus, and Kokomo, and at three other locations around the state.

Military Connectivity Expert Honored with Distinguished Alumna Award
Sara Jane Haehl, a senior Marine Corps representative with the Department of Navy, recently received the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. She received the award for her achievement in the field of engineering and technology during the school’s 29th Annual Honors Convocation in Carmel, Ind.

IUPUI Advising Program Wins National Award
University College's advising program, Creative Staffing: Using Shared Advisors to Maximize Student Success, has been selected as an outstanding institutional advising program award winner as part of the 2003 National Academic Advising Association's national awards program.
This program, directed by Cathy Buyarski, was selected as one of three programs to be honored with this award in nationwide competition this year. The award will be presented during association's annual national conference in Dallas, Texas, in October.

School of Science to Offer 500 Festival Kid's Day Activities
Don't miss the School of Science at the 500 Festival Kid's Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (May 17) on Monument Circle. The festival is the largest outdoor free festival for children in the state.
