During the opening session of the 13th annual Joseph Taylor Symposium on Feb. 18, IUPUI Chancellor Gerald L. Bepko presented the 2002 Dr. Joseph T. Taylor Excellence in Diversity Awards. The symposium is named after the late Dr. Joseph T. Taylor, the first dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.



Chancellor Gerald Bepko (above, right) congratulates Patrick Gee, director of The Minority Engineering Advancement Program (MEAP) at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI as Gee accepts the Dr. Joseph T. Taylor Excellence in Diversity Program Award. The award recognized MEAP, now in its 25th year, for its work in supporting minority students in the areas of engineering and technology.


Lillian Stokes (right), associate professor of the IU School of Nursing, won the Excellence in Diversity Award honoring individual achievements. The award recognizes Stokes for 30 years of work, including the initiatives she developed to increase minority enrollment and retention at IUPUI. Stokes is shown with Hertha Ward Taylor, Dr. Taylor's widow and recipient of the first Excellence In Diversity Award.


In addition to the individual and program awards, Distinguished Contributions awards were presented to Miriam Langsam, associate dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts; Jose R. Rosario, director of the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education at the IU School of Education; David Wilkes, associate professor of the IU School of Medicine; and the Department of Human Resources Administration Training.

HERRON OPENS LATEST FACULTY SHOW
Herron Gallery's latest exhibit opened on February 13 featuring the work of staff and adjunct faculty. "Herron Faculty Exhibit 2002" is the last in a cycle of four exhibits held annually to showcase the work of Herron faculty. Herron Gallery is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays. IU MEDICAL STUDENTS' SHOW BENEFITS INDIANAPOLIS' HOMELESS
Indiana University School of Medicine students will temporarily break from their studies and clinical rotations and will step into the spotlight for a program that aids the city’s homeless.

EDUCATION PROFESSORS RECEIVE HONORS
Two education professors recently received top honors. The National Science Teacher's Association chose Professor Charlie Barman to receive a Distinguished Teaching Award for 2002. The award is given to members who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of science teaching. He will receive the award on March 28.

Associate Professor Jacqueline Blackwell was recently chosen as president-elect for the Association for Childhood Education International. The association promotes and supports the optimal education and development of children and the professional growth of educators and others committed to the needs of children. Blackwell, who previously served as a vice-president for the organization, will take office April 7.
