HERRON MURALS AROUND TOWN The talents of Herron students Lauren Kussro and Aaron Nickolson have been in demand lately. They recently completed two separate murals around town. "This conference is used by many school corporations across the state as an opportunity for professional development for teachers," said education professor Chris Leland. "It is significant that so many of our students are seen as having the expertise to take on the role of mentoring veteran educators." Two groups presented their experiences using nontraditional teaching methods with elementary school students including inquiry-based learning and critical literacy. Inquiry-based learning involves teaching based on what the students are interested in learning more about. Critical literacy uses children's literature to facilitate discussions on tough social issues like violence and discrimination that are not usually addressed in elementary classrooms.
