HERRON MURALS AROUND TOWN
The talents of Herron students Lauren Kussro and Aaron Nickolson have been in demand lately. They recently completed two separate murals around town. The Pike library commissioned the two along with assistant instructor Dante Cozzi to paint a colorful underwater scene near the library's children's section (below) and Cajun restaurant Gumbo a Go-Go hired them to create a lively New Orleans scene (second below).

PRESENTERS AT THE STATE READING CONFERENCE
Nine IUPUI education students presented their research at the Indiana State Reading Conference on Feb. 4. "This conference is used by many school corporations across the state as an opportunity for professional development for teachers," said education professor Chris Leland. "It is significant that so many of our students are seen as having the expertise to take on the role of mentoring veteran educators." Two groups presented their experiences using nontraditional teaching methods with elementary school students including inquiry-based learning and critical literacy. Inquiry-based learning involves teaching based on what the students are interested in learning more about. Critical literacy uses children's literature to facilitate discussions on tough social issues like violence and discrimination that are not usually addressed in elementary classrooms.

KEY LEARNING
The Key Learning Community, an IPS magnet school known worldwide for its research and development of teaching methodology, is one of several schools where IUPUI education students receive their field experience. Education professors Michael Cohen and Sue Mau also sit on the school's advisory Community Resource Committee. Three nationally known theorists, Howard Gardner, Mihaly Csikszentmihaly, and David Feldman, on whose theories the school is based, will visit the school and speak on Feb. 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hilbert Circle Theater. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 226-4992.
