HERRON
EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS PRIVATE HOOSIER ARTWORK
INDIANAPOLIS - Hoosiers don't need to travel thousands of miles to the Lourve or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in search of great works of art. There are many of these jewels hidden away in homes right here in Indianapolis.
Herron School of Art will bring some of those amazing works to light for the first time in a new exhibit entitled "IndiCollects." The exhibit will feature works that reflect the high caliber and aesthetic diversity of some of the best private collections in the city. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will open on Aug. 30 from 5-7 p.m. and run through Sept. 23.
Local collector Claudette Einhorn's love of art began as a teenager one afternoon in the Art Institute of Chicago. The moment she saw Seurat's "Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte," she knew art would be a part of her life forever and she began accumulating works that "made her happy." Today, she has amassed an impressive collection that includes everything from sculptures to furniture and artists from Indianapolis painter T.C. Steele to her son, a trainer photographer.
"My pieces are extensions of who I am. They reflect what I want around me," said Einhorn. "Art gives a texture to one's life beyond daily living. It lifts you above an ordinary existence to a spiritual plane."
Einhorn's collection is one of more than 30 that will be represented at the exhibit. Gallery Director David Russick selected more than 60 pieces representing the range of media taught at Herron School of Art including painting, prints, sculpture, photography, design, furniture design and ceramics.
"As with all exhibits at the gallery I wanted this one to inspire the Herron students. I have labored to be sure that every student, regardless of their chosen medium, will see that there are collectors out there who share their interest - be that photography, printmaking, ceramics or whatever," said Russick. "I have also worked hard to curate the exhibit to include not just well-known artists, but what I consider 'finds' - top notch artwork by artists who are not exactly household names."
Herron Gallery is located at Herron School of Art at IUPUI at 1701 N. Pennsylvania St. and is open everyday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Thursdays until 7 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays. For more information, please call the Herron Gallery at (317) 920-2420.
