Discussion of IU School of Medicine's Automotive Safety Program surveys

The Indiana University School of Medicine's Automotive Safety Program conducted studies in 1999 and 2000 to measure the prevalence of school bus stop-arm violations in Indiana. Despite steep fines and possible jail time, Indiana motorists put children at risk of injury or death each day by illegally passing school buses as they load and unload children. Only a few other states have attempted to measure the prevalence of stop-arm violations.

Two methods were used to measure these violations in Indiana. Please join Jeff Mathews, director of the Automotive Safety Program, as he discusses the results and methodology of each survey on April 20 from noon-1 p.m. The seminar is sponsored by the Bowen Research Center and will be held in the Ruth Lilly Learning Center, Riley Outpatient Center.

Those who RSVP to kcunning@iupui.edu or call 278-0312 will receive a boxed lunch.

IUPUI University Library Staff Create Government Resource WebSite

What do the Congressional Quarterly, National Library of Australia and the Pentagon Library share in connecting with the IUPUI University Library? They have all recently joined public libraries and academic libraries from around the globe in adding a unique resource link to their Internet websites, "Abbreviations and Acronyms of the U.S. Government," created and maintained by Kelly Smith, of the University Library Reference Team.

Hundreds of agencies of the federal government are actually known more commonly by their acronym than by their full name. Examples include the CDC, IRS, and NAFTA. The University Library page was designed to help clear up some of the frustration often encountered in trying to decipher the real names of government entities.

Located at www.ulib.iupui.edu/subjectareas/gov/docs_abbrev.html, the site provides the unique element of direct links to the Internet website for each of the more than 600 agencies, programs and publications listed. In a recent assessment of the month of March 2001, the site received over 6100 hits, representing all domain types (.com, .edu, .gov, etc.) and 20 different countries from around the world.

For more information about the "Abbreviations and Acronyms of the U.S. Government" site, contact Kelly Smith at kelsmith@iupui.edu, or by calling (317) 278-1376.
