STATE
FORUMS TO DISCUSS NEW TAX ASSESSMENT RULES
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (IACIR) staffed by the Center for Urban Policy and the Environment at IUPUI will host a series of public issue forums around the state on property tax reassessment.
In 1998, the Indiana Supreme Court held that the state regulations for the assessment of real property were unconstitutional. The Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners has thus adopted new regulations for assessing property tax, which will take effect in March 2002.
Senator Beverly Gard, chairman of the IACIR, anticipates that the forums will solicit comments from taxpayers and local elected and appointed officials about the effects of the new assessment regulations. The comments will then be relayed to the General Assembly and other state personnel. Roundtable discussions will focus on tax shifts expected from the new rules, state and local fiscal procedures and the effects of the new rules on stakeholders.
"As this new era unfolds, IACIR will engage government officials and stakeholders to gain valuable insights into the new assessment rules and share recommendations for change with the General Assembly and local and state officials," said John Krauss, director of IACIR.
Each forum will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. local time. The dates and locations of forums are as follows:
- Lafayette - October 23, 2001, Marion Crawley Athletic Center, Lafayette Jefferson High School auxiliary gymnasium, 1801 South 18th St.
- Seymour - October 29, 2001, City Hall, 301-309 North Chestnut St.
- Evansville - November 1, 2001, University of Southern Indiana, Carter Hall, University Center, 8600 University Blvd.
- Noblesville - November 5, 2001, Hamilton County 4-H Grounds, Exhibition Center, Hall A, 2003 Pleasant St.
- Fort Wayne - November 12, 2001, Walb Memorial Union Ballroom, IPFW, 2101 E. Coliseum Blvd.
The IACIR is composed of 23 members representing the General Assembly; local, county, and township government; state administration; and citizens, and has previously conducted forums regarding annexation issues.
The forums are sponsored by the IACIR, and co-sponsored by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, the Indiana Township Association, and the Association of Indiana Counties.
